Characterizing the exposure of streams in southern Ontario to agricultural pesticides

Summary: This study characterized pesticide exposure to aquatic communities by analyzing streamwater samples from agricultural areas in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Various pesticides were detected in the samples, including herbicides and neonicotinoid insecticides. The study found associations between pesticide concentrations and upstream land use and crop type, and overall low potential toxicity to aquatic communities. However, certain pesticides may pose a toxicity risk to aquatic invertebrates.

Insight into the degradation of methomyl in water by peroxymonosulfate

Summary: Methomyl (MET), a widely used carbamate pesticide, can be effectively degraded using peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes. Different systems, such as PMS-Only, pyrite (PyR)-PMS and zero-valent iron (ZVI)-PMS, showed varying levels of MET degradation, with singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) playing a major role. The PMS-Only system demonstrated efficient degradation across a wide range of conditions and showed promising results in real water samples.
