Interlink among catalyst loading, transport and performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells: a pore-scale study

Xing Li et al.

Summary: An optimum balance between performance and Pt loading is crucial for the commercialization of PEM fuel cells. This study develops an advanced pore-scale model to investigate the interlink between Pt loading, reactive transport, and performance. The results show that Pt loading has little effect on electronic potential drop but significantly affects ionic potential drop. The distribution of local overpotential and reaction rate is correlated with the importance of proton conduction.

Revealing failure modes and effect of catalyst layer properties for PEM fuel cell cold start using an agglomerate model

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: A dynamic model is proposed to study the cold start process of proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The competition between reactant concentrations and electro-catalytic surface within catalyst agglomerates leads to different failure modes at different start-up current densities. Additionally, the thickness of the cathode catalyst layer and the ionomer to carbon ratio have significant effects on the critical ice fraction.

Optimization of gas diffusion layer in high temperature PEMFC with the focuses on thickness and porosity

Lingchao Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness and porosity on flow uniformity, diffusion flux, and ohmic resistance in a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) using a numerical non-isothermal 3D model. The research reveals that increasing GDL thickness and porosity leads to higher flow uniformity and ohmic resistance, but the influence on diffusion flux is opposite. The optimal GDL thickness and porosity are identified for improved performance in the fuel cell system.

Ionomer content effect on charge and gas transport in the cathode catalyst layer of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells

Yurii V. Yakovlev et al.

Summary: The performance of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is closely related to the transport properties of gas and charge carriers in the cathode catalyst layer. Selecting a suitable ionomer/carbon ratio can enhance the fuel cell performance, with increasing ionomer content decreasing proton resistance and increasing electron resistance. At an ionomer/carbon ratio of 0.6, the fuel cell exhibited the highest power density due to low oxygen transport and proton resistance.

Summary: In this study, a two-fluid model was developed to describe the multi-phase flow in the entire fuel cell, successfully addressing the prediction challenges of multi-phase flow in gas flow channels. The model confirmed the impact of different contact angles on cell performance, revealing that multi-phase flow leads to more non-uniform oxygen distributions and greater concentration loss.
