Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents as green absorbents for hydrophilic VOC elimination

Chun-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are efficient in eliminating hydrophilic VOCs due to their high absorption capacity and favorable gas-to-liquid mass transfer. Among the DESs explored, the one containing thymol and decanoic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio exhibits the highest acetone absorption capacity, showing the key role of hydrogen bonding interaction in achieving superior solubility of acetone in DESs. The absorbed acetone can be easily removed from the DESs, making the process economically and ecologically beneficial for hydrophilic VOC elimination.

Cyclodextrin-based supramolecular low melting mixtures: efficient absorbents for volatile organic compounds abatement

Somenath Panda et al.

Summary: Modified cyclodextrins and levulinic acid were used to form supramolecular low-melting mixtures (LMMs) for the study of absorption characteristics towards five VOCs. The LMMs showed high absorption efficiency, linear relationship with concentration, and stable absorption capacity even after multiple cycles.

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents as attractive media for low-concentration hydrophobic VOC capture

Chun-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of capturing VOCs from exhaust using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and found that DESs with fatty acids containing long alkyl chains achieved high absorption capacity. The hydrophobic interactions in fatty acid eutectics were critical for improving VOC absorption ability.

Removal of Siloxanes from Model Biogas by Means of Deep Eutectic Solvents in Absorption Process

Edyta Slupek et al.

Summary: This study screened 20 deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and 6 conventional solvents, and found that TPABr:TEG (1:3) is a highly effective absorption solvent for removing siloxanes from model biogas, with the main driving force being the formation of hydrogen bonds between DES and siloxanes.

Basics and properties of deep eutectic solvents: a review

Tracy El Achkar et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents, emerging in green chemistry only seventeen years ago, have led to a plethora of publications covering various research areas and diverse fields of application. They are seen as promising alternatives to conventional organic solvents due to their straightforward preparation using highly accessible and natural compounds, as well as high tunability in properties. The physicochemical properties of these solvents, such as phase behavior, density, viscosity, ionic conductivity, surface tension, and polarity, can be controlled by factors like the choice of forming compounds, molar ratio, temperature, and water content.

New Carvone-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents for Siloxanes Capture from Biogas

Patrycja Makos-Chelstowska et al.

Summary: The purification of biogas to remove siloxanes, which can lead to deposits on engine components during combustion and shorten the lifespan of the installation, is receiving increasing attention. One effective method is physical absorption using appropriate solvents, with deep eutectic solvents (DES) being highlighted for their biodegradability, non-toxicity, and high absorption capacity. Studies have shown that DESs composed of carvone and carboxylic acids exhibit the highest affinity to siloxanes, with interactions such as hydrogen bonding and non-bonded interactions playing key roles in their effectiveness.

Partitioning, solubility and solubilization of limonene into water or short-chain phosphatidylcholine solutions

Andrew P. Karman et al.

Summary: In this study, equilibrium distributions of hydrophobic solutes in closed systems containing vapor and aqueous solution were determined using HS-SPME. The presence of short-chain phospholipids influenced the partition coefficients and solubility values for the solutes, indicating different distribution patterns at various temperatures. The study also evaluated the partitioning of solutes between vapor phase, aqueous dissolution, and micelles, along with the effect of surfactant concentrations on partition coefficients and critical micelle concentrations.

Deep eutectic solvent-based green absorbents for the effective removal of volatile organochlorine compounds from biogas

Patrycja Makos-Chelstowska et al.

Summary: A new procedure based on physical absorption using deep eutectic solvents (DES) composed of natural components was developed in this study to efficiently absorb volatile organochlorine compounds (VOXs) present in biogas, reducing environmental problems caused by VOXs. The absorption efficiency of DES composed of syringol and levulinic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio was proven, and it was demonstrated that DES could maintain its absorption capacity after multiple absorption-desorption cycles. Studies on absorption mechanisms revealed that H-bonding and van der Waals interactions were the main driving forces for the removal of VOXs from biogas.
