Insight into the performance and mechanism of persimmon tannin functionalized waste paper for U(VI) and Cr(VI) removal

Fenglei Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized waste paper as a cross-linking agent to immobilize persimmon tannin for the removal of U(VI) and Cr(VI), achieving competitive maximum removal capacities. The adsorption process was influenced by various factors and well fitted by Langmuir and Pseudo-second-order equations. Adsorption mechanisms were identified as surface complexation for U(VI) and redox reaction for Cr(VI), providing a high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbent for radioactive nuclide and heavy metal treatment.

Summary: UV photolysis of CDMA activated HO center dot to degrade BPA, with inhibitive effects from pH, HCO3-/CO32-, Cl-, and natural organic matter. UV photolysis reduced NDMA formation at pH 8.0 but increased TCNM formation at pH 7.0 and 8.0, highlighting concerns about the formation of organic chloramines.

Yanni Xi et al.

Summary: The composite material CMC-FeS@EPS was developed for the removal of Cr(VI) from water, showing higher efficiency compared to traditional materials, with good performance in a wide range of pH values and in the presence of other ions. FTIR and XPS analysis demonstrated that EPS functional groups accelerated the adsorption and precipitation process, while electrochemical results showed faster electron transfer to Cr(VI) in CMC-FeS@EPS compared to CMC-FeS.

Properties of oxidatively torrefied Chinese fir residue: Color dimension, pyrolysis kinetics, and storage behavior

Yanni Xi et al.

Summary: Chinese fir residue was torrefied at 240-270 degrees C in 0-9% O-2 atmosphere to improve its utilization, and the relationships between mass loss, proximate analysis, elemental analysis, and color coordinates were established. The increased O-2 concentration significantly affected the peak temperature, peak height, T-50, and R-50 of the torrefied samples, especially at 270 degrees C. As temperature and O-2 increased, the lignocellulose fragmentation accelerated and the apparent activation energy decreased. During storage, the hydrophobicity and composition change reduced the loss of dry matter, color change, and aldehyde/ketone emission.

Effect of Copresence of Zerovalent Iron and Sulfate Reducing Bacteria on Reductive Dechlorination of Trichloroethylene

Syful Islam et al.

Summary: The use of sulfur-reducing bacteria to amend zerovalent iron (ZVI) materials has been shown to enhance their reactivity towards organohalide contaminants like trichloroethene, suggesting multiple mechanisms are involved in the dechlorination process. The synergy observed in the SRB-ZVI system may offer a valuable remediation strategy to overcome limitations of standalone biological or abiotic dechlorination approaches for chlorinated solvent abatement.

Sulfidation of zerovalent iron for improving the selectivity toward Cr(VI) in oxic water: Involvements of FeSx

Haozhen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of sulfidation on the selectivity of ZVI towards Cr(VI), finding that sulfidation significantly increased the removal rate of Cr(VI) and was mainly attributed to the involvement of FeSx. Sulfidation can tune the reactive sites and corrosion products of ZVI to improve the mass transfer and electron transfer of Cr(VI), providing a new approach to enhance the selectivity of ZVI for water decontamination.

Fenglei Liu et al.

Summary: A bio-adsorbent DACS-CA was developed by immobilizing caffeic acid on dialdehyde corn starch for efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Characterization analysis indicated a redox reaction between Cr(VI) and the bio-adsorbent, where Cr(VI) was initially loaded via electrostatic interaction, partially converted into Cr(III), and then immobilized on DACS-CA's carboxyl groups.

Insight the roles of loosely-bound and tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances on Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ biosorption process with Desulfovibrio vulgaris

Sihui Lu et al.

Summary: This study explored the fate and mechanism of metal cations biosorption in the Desulfovibrio vulgaris system, finding that EPS (including TB-EPS and LB-EPS) played a greater role in adsorption compared to bacterial cells. The adsorption capacity of Pb2+ on EPS was greater than that of Cu2+ and Zn2+, and the adsorption process was dominated by complexation and electrostatic interaction. The findings provide valuable information on the interactions between Desulfovibrio vulgaris and its secreted EPS with metal cations.
