Synergistic degradation for o-chlorophenol and enhancement of power generation by a coupled photocatalytic-microbial fuel cell system

Chengzhi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchically photocatalytic microbial fuel cell system was established to enhance power generation and organic pollutant removal efficiency. The photoanode effectively utilized oxygen in the solution to improve the removal of chlorophenol and increase the maximum power density. The coupled system showed better performance in chlorophenol removal compared to the conventional mode.

Fumarate disproportionation by Geobacter sulfurreducens and its involvement in biocorrosion and interspecies electron transfer

Xiao-Chen Shi et al.

Summary: The model electroactive bacterium Geobacter sulfurreducens can acquire electrons directly from solid donors and use C4 dicarboxylates as a carbon source. Mutations in the PilR regulator and the ability to utilize solid electron donors contribute to the competitive advantage and widespread distribution of G. sulfurreducens in anaerobic ecosystems.

Exerting applied voltage promotes microbial activity of marine anammox bacteria for nitrogen removal in saline wastewater treatment

Zhi Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the application of voltage in a bioelectrochemical system can effectively promote the activity of marine anammox bacteria in saline wastewater treatment, leading to an increase in nitrogen removal rate. The optimal voltage was found to be 1.5 V, which resulted in a 27.45% higher total nitrogen removal rate compared to without applied voltage. The study also revealed that higher voltage (>2.0 V) had a negative effect on MAB activity, but the bioactivity was recoverable after removing the high voltage.

Enhancing bio-cathodic nitrate removal through anode-cathode polarity inversion together with regulating the anode electroactivity

Zhufan Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated an anode-cathode polarity inversion method to rapidly cultivate high-performance nitrate-reducing bio-cathode and found a correlation between the oxidation performance and the reduction performance. The bioelectrode with high bio-anodic bio-oxidation electroactivity achieved a significantly higher nitrate removal rate compared to the bioelectrode with low bio-oxidation electroactivity. The findings provide a novel strategy for enhancing bio-cathodic nitrate removal performance and have potential implications for the development of bio-cathodes with specific functions.

Harnessing Photoelectrochemistry for Wastewater Nitrate Treatment Coupled with Resource Recovery

Luisa Barrera et al.

Summary: Using a photoelectrochemical device, wastewater nitrates can be transformed into ammonia and nitrous oxide with water oxidation, enhancing resource recovery efficiency. The performance is influenced by competing reactions depending on nitrate concentration and light absorber band gap, but minimal impact is observed under specific conditions.
