Unbalanced clustering and solitary states in coupled excitable systems

Igor Franovic et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the mechanisms and connection between two types of symmetry-broken states, the unbalanced periodic two-cluster states and solitary states, in coupled excitable systems with attractive and repulsive interactions. We find that the prevalent solitary states in non-locally coupled arrays derive their dynamic features from the corresponding unbalanced cluster states in globally coupled networks. Additionally, we discover cluster and solitary states with leap-frog activity patterns, where the interplay of excitability and local multiscale dynamics leads to an alternating order of spiking between the units.

Collective states in a ring network of theta neurons

Oleh Omel'chenko et al.

Summary: We analyze a continuum evolution equation for a ring network of theta neurons with non-local homogeneous coupling, providing an analytical description of all possible steady states and their stability. By considering various parameter sets, we identify the typical bifurcation scenarios of the network and establish a rigorous theoretical foundation for previously observed numerical results.

Nonlinear climate dynamics: From deterministic behaviour to stochastic excitability and chaos

Dmitri V. Alexandrov et al.

Summary: Glacial-interglacial cycles are global climatic changes that have occurred over the past 3 million years, and they are modeled using low-order dynamical systems and the Milankovitch theory. This study explores the effects of stochastic forcings on generating large-scale oscillations in these cycles, demonstrating how noise can lead to trajectories that differ from deterministic models.

Chimeras

Fatemeh Parastesh et al.

Summary: Chimeras, observed in both biological and physical systems, represent an important new paradigm of nonlinear dynamics. They have been linked to various phenomena such as uni-hemispheric sleep in animals, power grid outages, and optomechanics. Future research opportunities and challenges in understanding chimeras are outlined.

Splay states and two-cluster states in ensembles of excitable units

Robert Ronge et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the emergence and stability of periodic collective oscillations in systems of identical excitable units with repulsive all-to-all interaction. Special attention is given to splay states and two-cluster states. The research demonstrates a gradual transfer of stability between two-cluster and splay states in extended families of such systems.

Bumps, chimera states, and Turing patterns in systems of coupled active rotators

Igor Franovic et al.

Summary: The study investigates bump states in an array of active rotators coupled by nonlocal attraction and global repulsion, demonstrating how they can emerge from completely coherent Turing patterns and eventually transform into extensive chaos with many incoherent units. Different types of transitions are presented, explaining the formation of coherence-incoherence patterns based on the classical paradigm of short-range activation and long-range inhibition.

The changing notion of chimera states, a critical review

Sindre W. Haugland

Summary: Chimera states, characterized by the coexistence of synchronous and asynchronous motion, have been extensively researched since 2004. Different model types and coupling schemes have influenced the common understanding of what constitutes a chimera state, with various chimera-derived terms emerging over the years.

Hubs, diversity, and synchronization in FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillator networks: Resonance effects and biophysical implications

Stefano Scialla et al.

Summary: Utilizing the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations to model the oscillatory electrical behavior of beta-cells, the study developed a coupled oscillator network model with a cubic lattice topology. It was found that the optimal ratio of hubs to nonhubs in the system is determined by the position of diversity-induced resonance maximum, with hubs having the ability to switch on and off their pacemaker function to ensure optimal oscillatory performance in response to environmental changes.

Pulse-timing symmetry breaking in an excitable optical system with delay

Soizic Terrien et al.

Summary: Excitable systems with delayed feedback maintain multistable pulsing regimes, with the pulse-timing symmetry being able to break, and the symmetry-broken states are stable in large regions of the parameter space. These results have significant implications in photonics.

Emergence and stability of periodic two-cluster states for ensembles of excitable units

Robert Ronge et al.

Summary: This study focuses on dynamics in ensembles of identical excitable units with global repulsive interaction, demonstrating large-scale collective oscillations and transitions caused by global bifurcations. Stability of clusters with respect to splitting perturbations and changes in stability marked by the Watanabe-Strogatz integrability were also explored. Furthermore, similar bifurcations and switches in stability were shown to occur in more elaborate models in higher dimensions like ensembles of voltage-coupled Morris-Lecar neurons.
