Solid-state single-crystal growth of YAG and Nd: YAG by spark plasma sintering

Iva Milisavljevic et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the solid-state single-crystal growth (SSCG) approach is a simple and cost-effective alternative for obtaining single crystals. In this study, YAG and Nd:YAG single crystals were grown using the SSCG method with spark plasma sintering (SPS). The results demonstrate the strong potential of the SSCG technique coupled with SPS for growing high-quality undoped and highly doped YAG single crystals.

Effect of annealing on microstructure and luminescence characteristics in spark plasma sintered Ce3+-activated (Gd, Lu)3Al5O12 garnet ceramics

Ji-Hwoan Lee et al.

Summary: In the case of spark plasma sintered (SPSed) oxides, the introduction of carbon contamination and oxygen vacancies during the sintering process had direct effects on transmittance and luminescence characteristics. However, annealing processes could significantly improve the low luminescence intensity by reducing carbon contamination and oxygen vacancies. Through the SPS process, densification of sintered bodies was achieved, and annealing helped to enhance luminescence properties.

Simulation of densification behavior of nano-powder in final sintering stage: Effect of pore-size distribution

Byung-Nam Kim et al.

Summary: This study modeled and simulated the densification behavior of nano-sized powder in the final sintering stage, showing that the densification rate for size-distributed pores is lower than for single-sized ones. By choosing appropriate pore-size distributions, the experimental relationship between densification rate and porosity can be reproduced effectively. Additionally, the simulation revealed that the sintering stress with densification may increase or decrease depending on the pore size distribution, but is significantly lower than for single-sized pores.

Pressure-assisted sintering and characterization of Nd:YAG ceramic lasers

Avital Wagner et al.

Summary: Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is an advanced densification technique used to fabricate various transparent ceramics, offering potential for producing thin-disk ceramic laser materials. This study focused on characterizing the laser performance of Nd:YAG ceramics fabricated using one-stage SPS under different pressures, revealing that residual porosity affects the accuracy of predicting laser performance based on in-line transmittance spectra. Additionally, comparisons between conventional and high-pressure SPS ceramics were made, setting the stage for future advancements in laser materials fabricated by SPS or similar techniques.

Mengyao Wang et al.

Summary: A novel transparent magneto-optical holmium aluminum garnet (HoAG) ceramic with high transmittance and infrared cut-off properties was successfully fabricated by a facile co-precipitation strategy. The addition of a silica sintering aid promoted densification during sintering process. The ceramic exhibited excellent magneto-optical properties and thermal conductivity.

Fabrication of transparent Y2O3 ceramics by two-step spark plasma sintering

Ji-Hwoan Lee et al.

Summary: The transparent Y2O3 ceramics were fabricated using a two-step pressure and heating profile, which improved shrinkage behavior and achieved sufficient density without excessive coarsening. As a result, the normalized real in-line transmittance was 80.6% at 1100 nm, close to the theoretical transmittance of 81.6%. The two-step SPS profile proved to be advantageous in manufacturing ceramics with transparency and densification.
