Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-reinforced ceramic nanocomposites for aerospace applications: a review

Karthikeyan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent thermal and mechanical properties at lower density, making them a suitable reinforcement material for composites in aerospace applications. However, further research and development are still needed in this field.

Analysis of failure mechanisms of Oxide - Oxide ceramic matrix composites

Karthikeyan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: The failure mechanisms of Oxide-Oxide ceramic matrix composites AS-N610 were investigated in this study. The unnotched samples showed perfect elastic behavior at room temperature, while the notched samples exhibited pseudo-ductile behavior. The tensile strength of the composites decreased at high temperatures. Thermal shock experiments revealed a reduction in retained strength of the samples. Fracture origin was observed on the mid-plane of all samples, indicating higher fiber pull-out, delamination, and pseudo-ductile behavior. Finite element analysis confirmed stress concentration on the failure areas.

Effect of type and amount of alumina as dopant over the densification and the electrical properties of zinc oxide ceramic electrodes

M. -J. Sanchez-Rivera et al.

Summary: Aluminum-doped zinc oxide electrodes can be a cost-effective alternative to expensive electrodes for removing refractory and emergent contaminants from industrial wastewaters. The performance of the electrodes is influenced by the nature of the alumina precursors and sintering treatment, with colloidal alumina allowing for slightly lower resistivity values within a narrower working interval.

Mechanical and thermal properties of spark plasma sintered Alumina-MWCNTs nanocomposites prepared via improvised colloidal route

Karthikeyan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: This study focused on fabricating Al2O3-MWCNTs composites via spark plasma sintering, adjusting the ratio of MWCNTs and alumina. The results showed that incorporating MWCNTs significantly improves the mechanical properties of the composites, with 1 wt% MWCNTs content demonstrating the best performance.

Effect of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes on Improvement of Fracture Toughness of Spark-Plasma-Sintered Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Nanocomposites

T. Arunkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, highly dense yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nano-ceramics reinforced with TC-CVD-synthesized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated using spark plasma sintering. The physical and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated, revealing that the increase in MWCNTs concentration led to a decrease in hardness but an improvement in wear resistance and fracture toughness. The study utilized X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy for characterization, and found that toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection, branching, and bridging of MWCNTs contributed to the enhanced fracture toughness of the nanocomposites.

Experimental investigation and mathematical modelling of water vapour corrosion of Ti3SiC2 and Ti2AlC ceramics and their mechanical behaviour

Karthikeyan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: Commercially available Ti3SiC2 and Ti2AlC ceramics were investigated for their wet corrosion and mechanical behavior, with Ti2AlC showing higher oxidation resistance and formation of protective layers, while Ti3SiC2 exhibited decreased bending strength but higher tensile strength under hydrothermal conditions. Finite element analysis was used to validate the tensile strength results, and mathematical models were employed to study and compare the oxidation thickness for the ceramics. The models effectively validated the experimental results, showing the potential for predicting oxidation behavior in Ti3SiC2 ceramics.
