Synthesis of a meltable polyzirconosilane precursor for SiZrNC multinary ceramics

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, a stepwise synthesis of polyzirconosilane (PZCS) with Zr-C-Si-N polymeric chain was proposed. The reaction mechanism was discussed based on the frontier molecular orbital theory and atom transfer radical polymerization. The PZCS precursor exhibited excellent soluble and meltable properties and could be spun into fibers using melt spinning technique. The ceramization process of PZCS resulted in the formation of SiZrNC multinary ceramics.

Synthesis of nano-phase ZrC by carbothermal reduction using a ZrO2-carbon nano-composite

Sarmad Naim Katea et al.

Summary: Carbothermal reduction of Zr-sucrose gels powders into nano-phase ZrC or ZrC-Zr(C, O) core-shell powders was achieved by using a composite of 2-4 nm sized ZrO2 and amorphous carbon. The resulting products varied in morphology and structure depending on the sucrose-carbon:Zr ratio in the gels.

Mechanical behaviour of polymer derived ceramics - a review

Ravindran Sujith et al.

Summary: Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) have been used and explored for various applications over the past five decades. The transition from a precursor to an inorganic ceramic by pyrolysis and heat-treatment results in amorphous or nanocrystalline composites, with phases controlled by processing conditions. Understanding the mechanical behavior of PDCs is crucial for long-term use, but quantitative estimation of properties is challenging due to unique structure governed by precursor chemistry. Different forms of PDCs exhibit varied mechanical behavior, which can be studied through experimental and simulation-based approaches. Additive manufacturing processes have recently been used for fabricating PDCs, with their mechanical properties also being included in this review.

Design of a ductile carbon nanofiber/ZrB2 nanohybrid film with entanglement structure fabricated by electrostatic spinning

Lingxi Qu et al.

Summary: Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), a multi-functional man-made polymer material, is widely used in various products, especially in carbon fiber precursor fiber manufacturing. By utilizing optimal structural design, organic/inorganic nanocomposites can provide precursor materials with unique properties. In this study, a PAN-based carbon nanofiber (CNF) coated zirconium borate (ZrB2) particles fiber film was successfully fabricated, showing entanglement structure and confirmed presence of carbon atoms through analysis. The entanglement structure between CNFs and ZrB2 enhanced the tensile performance of the nanohybrid film, demonstrating a facile and universal approach for exploring organic/inorganic nanocomposites with controlled structures and excellent mechanical properties.

Controllable preparation of porous ZrB2-SiC ceramics via using KCl space holders

Shijie Wang et al.

Summary: A novel and facile technique using KCl as space holders, combined with partial sintering, was explored to prepare porous ZrB2-SiC ceramics with controllable pore structure, tunable compressive strength, and thermal conductivity. The properties of the porous ceramics, such as porosity, pore structure, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity, can be tuned by adjusting the KCl content and particle size.
