Recent progress in superabsorbent polymers for concrete

Christof Schroefl et al.

Summary: Scientific interest in superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) used in conjunction with cement-based building materials has shifted towards polymer physico-chemical topics, focusing on absorption/desorption kinetics, retention of absorbed liquid, and related principles. The effects of SAPs in concrete include modifying rheology, internal curing, self-sealing and self-healing of cracks, and enhancing freezing-and-thawing durability. Recent research also explores reducing fire spalling and promoting plant growth on green wall facades using SAPs.

Impact of Reaction Parameters and Water Matrices on the Removal of Organic Pollutants by TiO2/LED and ZnO/LED Heterogeneous Photocatalysis Using 365 and 398 nm Radiation

Mate Nafradi et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of high-power LED365nm and commercial, low-price LED398nm for heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts. The effects of light intensity, photon energy, quantum yield, electrical energy consumption, and matrices and inorganic components on radical formation were investigated. The results show that LED398nm has slower COU conversion rate compared to LED365nm, but significantly higher r(0)(7-HC)/r(0)(COU) ratio. The impact of matrices and inorganic components on the photocatalytic reaction differs for ZnO and TiO2.

Fungal bioremediation of polyethylene: Challenges and perspectives

Andrew R. Cowan et al.

Summary: Plastics, specifically polyethylene, are prevalent as materials and environmental pollutants due to long-term mass production and inadequate waste management. Current recycling and incineration processes are not sustainable solutions for tackling plastic waste, highlighting the need for the development of new waste-management technologies. Fungal-based biodegradation, particularly in relation to polyethylene, shows promise as a potential future solution to plastic waste.

Preparation of composite photocatalyst with tunable and self-indicating delayed onset of performance and its application in polyethylene degradation

Yuting Zhao et al.

Summary: A new type of composite photocatalyst, T@AIH, is designed with self-indicating and delayed-onset performance to increase the degradability of plastic. The color of T@AIH changes from blue to white when the photocatalytic performance starts, with tunable stable stage length and active stage reaction rate. The interconversion of polyiodide and high diffusivity in the composite play key roles in achieving stable and active stages.

Alkali-silica reaction products and cracks: X-ray micro-tomography-based analysis of their spatial-temporal evolution at a mesoscale

Mahdieh Shakoorioskooie et al.

Summary: In this study, a laboratory-scale methodology using X-ray micro-tomography and cesium as a contrast agent was proposed to advance the understanding of cracking due to alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete. The addition of cesium slightly accelerated the ASR kinetics, but the crack patterns with and without cesium were statistically equivalent. The study also found that ASR products may initially be a low-viscosity gel that can flow away from the source aggregate and settle later elsewhere as a rigid phase upon calcium uptake.
