Flexural strength and fatigue properties of interfacial transition zone at the microscale

Yidong Gan et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the flexural strength and fatigue properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) at the micrometre length scale. The results showed that the flexural strength of the ITZ is significantly higher than the macroscopic strength reported in literature, while the fatigue strength is lower than that of bulk cement paste. The study suggests that the microscopic mechanical interlocking and electrostatic interaction contribute to the bond strength of the ITZ. This research provides an experimental basis for the multiscale analysis of concrete under static and fatigue loading.

Chelate effect on fiber surface morphology and its benefits on pullout and tensile behaviors of ultra-high-performance concrete

Summary: Different types of engineered steel fibers were evaluated in terms of surface treatment and performance in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The surface roughness and properties of the fibers changed significantly after immersion in an electrolyte solution, with C fibers exhibiting the highest pullout energy and T1 fibers enhancing tensile strength and specific energy the most. Optimal reinforcement strategies recommended a 6-hour treatment of C and T0 fibers or the pristine T1 fiber to achieve desired tensile strengths and specific energies in UHPC.

Effect of the roughness of steel fibre surface on its wettability and the cement paste close to fibre surface

Summary: This study reveals that increasing fibre surface roughness results in more water adhering to or retained by the fibre, leading to a decrease in large pores and porosity in the microstructure of the cement paste.

Post-peak behaviour of rocks under cyclic loading using a double-criteria damage-controlled test method

Roohollah Shirani Faradonbeh et al.

Summary: Cyclic loading-induced hazards pose severe instability problems for surface and underground geotechnical projects. This study proposed an innovative double-criteria damage-controlled testing method to understand rock failure mechanisms under cyclic loading. The results showed slight increase in strength of rock specimens with increase in fatigue life in the pre-peak region due to cyclic loading-induced hardening, and a combination of class I and class II behaviors in the post-peak region during cyclic loading tests.
