Sustainable use of waste glass in alkali activated materials against H2SO4 and HCl acid attacks

Md Nabi Newaz Khan et al.

Summary: This study found that adding 10%-20% waste glass powder (GP) to alkali activated mortars can significantly reduce the physical, mechanical, and microstructural damages caused by acid attack. This is attributed to the additional Si, Na, and Ca ions provided by GP, which enhance the formation of reaction products and introduce a dense microstructure.

Reaction mechanisms of alkali-activated glass powder-ggbs-CAC composites

Pingping He et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the alkali activation reaction and alkali-silica reaction in alkali activated cement using glass powder and glass cullet as main materials. It was found that by incorporating different powder materials such as ground granulated blast furnace slag and calcium aluminate cement, the properties of the alkali activated cement can be controlled. Additionally, the effects of different material dosages on the properties of alkali activated cement were further investigated.

Roles of chlorine and sulphate in MSWIFA in GGBFS binder: Hydration, mechanical properties and stabilization considerations

Pengfei Ren et al.

Summary: The study showed that chlorine in MSWIFA can be easily washed out, while the removal of sulphate depended on the liquid to solid ratio; GGBFS can be better activated by low L/S washed-MSWIFA and the presence of C-S-H played a key role in long-term strength development. The main hydration products of the activated binders were C-S-H, AFt and Friedel's salt, and leaching tests demonstrated that the activated GGBFS binders were harmless to the environment.

Activator Anion Influences the Nanostructure of Alkali-Activated Slag Cements

Brant Walkley et al.

Summary: By using solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the effect of different activator types on the reaction products of aged alkali-activated slag cements was revealed. It was found that the anion type in the activator significantly influences the nanostructure and local hydration of the main binding phases in these cements.

A comprehensive review on performance of cementitious and geopolymeric concretes with recycled waste glass as powder, sand or cullet

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: Recycling waste glass for developing cementitious and geopolymeric concretes as sustainable construction materials is gaining more attention in the construction industry. The durability performance of concrete with waste glass is affected by factors such as the type, size, and replacement ratio of waste glass, as well as other factors like mineral additives, mixing, and curing methods. Fine glass powder can improve long-term durability by enhancing pozzolanic reactivity and reducing ASR expansion.
