Polylactic acid and polyhydroxybutyrate coating on hemp fiber: Its effect on hemp fiber reinforced epoxy composites performance

Sudhakar Behera et al.

Summary: This research investigates the influence of biodegradable polymer coatings on hemp fiber and hemp fiber reinforced epoxy composites. The results show that the coatings improve the surface roughness and crystallinity of the fibers, enhancing the interfacial adhesion with the epoxy matrix. The coatings also improve the mechanical and tribological properties of the composites.

Effect of alkali treatment and coupling agent on thermal and mechanical properties of Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes fibers reinforced HDPE composites

Anass Ait Benhamou et al.

Summary: In this study, Opuntia ficus-indica fibers were used as natural reinforcement in high-density polyethylene matrix, with alkali treatment and use of coupling agent SEBS-g-MA to improve interfacial adhesion. The alkali treatment was found to enhance hardness and Young's modulus properties, while the coupling agent increased plasticity and thermal stability of the composites.

Dry Sliding Wear Behavior of Chemically Treated Sisal Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Sudhakar Behera et al.

Summary: The research investigated the effect of fiber surface treatment on sisal fibers and their epoxy composites, showing improvements in surface roughness, crystallinity, and thermal stability of chemically treated fibers. The wear resistance of chemically modified SFREC was increased compared to untreated SFREC, with the best wear properties demonstrated by alkali-treated SFREC. Applied load and sliding distance were observed to have the most defining effect on wear volume loss of SFREC according to ANOVA findings.

Comparative study on material properties of wood-ash alkali and commercial alkali treated Sterculia fiber

Krishna Prasad Kandel et al.

Summary: In this research, alkali was extracted from wood ash and used to process lignocellulose fiber obtained from Sterculia villosa. The findings showed that the fiber treated with wood-ash alkali had similar mechanical strength to the fiber treated with sodium hydroxide, indicating that wood-ash alkali treatment could be a low-cost method for processing lignocellulose biomass.

Oscar Asumani et al.

Summary: The study found that alkali-silane treatment significantly improves the fatigue and impact strengths of kenaf fiber reinforced polypropylene composites, with an optimal alkali concentration of 5% to 6%. Microscopy examination revealed that fiber treatments have a significant impact on the damage mechanisms of the composites, with alkali-silane treated composites showing improved fiber-matrix adhesion.

Physical and abrasive wear behaviour of Urena lobata fiber-reinforced polymer composites

Chioma E. Njoku et al.

Summary: The influence of fiber loading and chemical treatment of Urena lobata natural fiber on the physical, wear, and thermal stability of polypropylene-based composites was investigated. The study found that alkali-treated Urena lobata fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites showed improved density and wear resistance, but absorbed more water compared to untreated fiber composites, also exhibiting enhanced thermal stability due to better fiber-matrix adhesion.

An Innovative Treatment Based on Sodium Citrate for Improving the Mechanical Performances of Flax Fiber Reinforced Composites

Vincenzo Fiore et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of a cost-effective and eco-friendly treatment using sodium citrate on the mechanical properties of flax fiber reinforced composites. Treating flax fibers in solutions with concentration up to 10% resulted in the best mechanical performances and lowest void contents in composites. Higher concentrations of Na3C6H5O7 negatively affected both the morphology and mechanical properties of composites.
