Investigation of Hydroxyapatite-Entrenched Cerium Organic Frameworks Incorporating Biopolymeric Beads for Efficient Fluoride Removal

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: In this study, hydroxyapatite-implanted cerium-based metal organic frameworks incorporating alginate and chitosan were developed for effective fluoride remediation. The biohybrid beads showed high defluoridation capacity and adsorbed fluoride through electrostatic attraction and complexation mechanism. The experimental results were well fit with adsorption kinetics and isotherm models, suggesting the potential application of biohybrid beads in field conditions and regeneration.

Recent advances in metal-organic framework-based materials for removal of fluoride in water: Performance, mechanism, and potential practical application

Xiaofeng Tang et al.

Summary: Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are regarded as promising adsorption materials for removing fluoride from water. This study reviews the synthesis of MOFs and their recent progress in aquatic defluoridation, classified according to the central metal ions. It provides an understanding of the effect factors for water remediation and analyzes the potential environmental application. The adsorption mechanism and evaluation of potential practical applications for fluoride removal by different MOFs are elucidated, and future research opportunities and prospects of MOF-based materials for fluoride removal are proposed.

Synthesis and characterization of defective UiO-66 for efficient co-immobilization of arsenate and fluoride from single/binary solutions

Subbaiah Muthu Prabhu et al.

Summary: In this study, UiO-66 architected fumaric acid mediated lanthanum (La-fum), zirconium (Zr-fum), and cerium (Ce-fum) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized for co-immobilizations of arsenate and fluoride. The Langmuir maximum adsorption densities of arsenate and fluoride on the MOFs were found to be record-high values compared to existing materials in the literature. XPS, PXRD, and FTIR studies confirmed the arsenate and fluoride adsorption on the MOF materials, while EXAFS studies confirmed the arsenate adsorption mechanism on La-fum and Ce-fum through monodentate complexation.

Enhanced fluoride adsorption from aqueous solution by zirconium (IV)-impregnated magnetic chitosan graphene oxide

Mingyu Liu et al.

Summary: Zirconium (IV)-impregnated magnetic chitosan graphene oxide (Zr-MCGO) was synthesized to remove fluoride from aqueous solution in batch mode. The study showed that Zr-MCGO exhibited good defluoridation capacity at different pH levels, could be easily separated using an external magnet, and potential adsorption mechanisms include electrostatic force, ligand exchange, and Lewis acid-base interaction.

Mesoporous goethite for rapid and high-capacity fluoride removal from drinking water

Xiao Zhao et al.

Summary: A series of mesoporous goethite were synthesized for rapid fluoride removal from water under different conditions. The adsorbents showed high adsorption capacity and stability over a wide range of pH, but were impacted by high concentrations of CO32- and PO43-. Recycling tests with real fluoride-contaminated groundwater demonstrated that the adsorbents remain effective for practical use. The major adsorption mechanism was identified as ion-exchange between fluoride ions and hydroxyl groups on the surface of goethite.

Design and development of amine functionalized iron based metal organic frameworks for selective fluoride removal from water environment

Antonysamy Jeyaseelan et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe@BDC and Fe@ABDC based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared for selective fluoride removal, showing enhanced defluoridation capacities of 4.90 and 4.92 mg g(-1) respectively. The properties of the composites were characterized through various analysis methods, and the factors affecting adsorption parameters were explored. The fluoride adsorption mechanism, applicability of field test, and recyclability of the composites were discussed in detail.
