Calcium enhances adsorption and thermal stability of organic compounds on soil minerals

Summary: Increasing calcium availability in soils through lime and gypsum application can enhance the adsorption of organic molecules by soil minerals, increasing the stability and altering the chemical properties of sorbed organic compounds. Stronger association of organic compounds with mineral surfaces in the presence of calcium may be a significant contributing factor to calcium-promoted organic matter accumulation in soils.

A new hypothesis for the origin of Amazonian Dark Earths

The applicability of Raman spectroscopy in the assessment of palaeowildfire intensity

The study found the best correlations between thermal maturity and D-band full-width at half-maximum (D-FWHM) and the D-/G-band full-width at half-maximum ratio (D-FWHM/G-FWHM) for assessing changes in paleowildfire intensity, with other parameters commonly applied to Raman studies of charcoal being influenced by non-linearity. Further analysis of precursor material on charcoal microstructure and consideration of parameters used in Raman spectroscopy are necessary for understanding prehistoric and modern wildfire intensity.
