Estimation of exchangeable sodium percentage from sodium adsorption ratio of salt-affected soils using traditional and dilution extracts, saturation percentage, electrical conductivity, and generalized regression neural networks

Mamoun A. Gharaibeh et al.

Summary: Soil sodicity can be best evaluated using the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), but this can be time-consuming. Alternatively, the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) is a simpler index commonly used for estimating soil sodicity. This study aimed to estimate ESP using four approaches, with the GRNN model providing the most accurate estimates and handling data heteroscedasticity effectively. Meanwhile, traditional dilution extracts showed a strong correlation between soil ESP and SAR, while the CF-theta(SP) approach performed better for predicting ESP. Additionally, EC1:5 gave reasonably accurate estimates of ESP and could be used as a screening test for sodicity assessment.

Pedotransfer functions for estimating soil water retention properties of northern China agricultural soils: Development and needs*

Xu Xu et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on developing pedotransfer functions for estimating soil water retention curve in northern China agricultural soils. The developed PTF-ANC showed acceptable accuracy in predicting soil water retention curve, indicating strong application potential for northern China soils. There is an absolute necessity for developing specific PTFs for northern China agricultural soils due to the inadequacy of existing external PTFs in characterizing the soil water retention curve of northern China agricultural soils.
