5-Hydroxymethylfurfural production from hexose sugars using adjustable acid- and base-functionalized mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts in aqueous media

Chachchaya Thunyaratchatanon et al.

Summary: The study investigated the conversion of glucose and fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) using various functionalized SBA-15 catalysts. By grafting different organosilanes onto the synthesized SBA-15 support, the acid, hydrophobicity, and base-modified SBA-15 catalysts were obtained, showing varied catalytic activities for the hexose-to-HMF reaction. Increasing the reaction temperature significantly enhanced the reaction, while other factors had minimal effects. Different catalysts exhibited distinct functions, with basic properties favoring isomerization and acidic properties optimal for dehydration.

High efficiency Al modified mesoporous SBA-15 catalyst for biomass-derived γ-valerolactone decarboxylation to butene

Haibiao Yu et al.

Summary: A series of xwt%Al-SBA-15 catalysts prepared by modified wetness impregnation were investigated for gamma-valer-olactone (GVL) decarboxylation to butene. The 2.23 wt%Al-SBA-15 catalyst showed excellent catalytic performance with high GVL conversion and butene yield. Mechanism studies indicated that the decarboxylation of gamma-protonated PEA controlled the reaction speed, and the regenerated catalyst also exhibited satisfactory catalytic activity with high butene yield after multiple cycles.

Novel and Efficient Biotechnological Approach to Produce 2,5-Diformylfuran from Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Alberto Millan Acosta et al.

Summary: The study describes for the first time the whole-cell oxidation of HMF to DFF by Fusarium culmorum EAN 51, with the biocatalytic transformation considered more cost-effective compared to chemocatalytic methods. By optimizing the nutrient concentrations, high yields and selectivity in the transformation process were achieved, opening up new possibilities for sustainable production of DFF from renewable biobased resources.

Shoukat Parvez et al.

Summary: Among 243 oriental herbs screened for tyrosinase inhibitory activity, methanol extract of Galla Rhois showed the most potent effect. The compound Methyl gallate isolated from Galla Rhois exhibited strong tyrosinase inhibitory activity, potentially serving as a new agent for inhibiting tyrosinase. Further studies on the application of Methyl gallate in cosmetics and as anti-melanogenic agents are recommended.
