Aerogel-structured MnO2 cathode assembled by defect-rich ultrathin nanosheets for zinc-ion batteries

Yang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the scalable synthesis of an aerogel-structured MnO2 (A-MnO2) assembled by defect-rich ultrathin nanosheets for ZIBs. The A-MnO2 exhibits enhanced electrical conductivity and decreased Zn2+ diffusion energy barrier through V doping and its induced oxygen vacancies, and the ultrathin nanosheets-assembled aerogel structure favors the exposure of more electrochemically active sites and shortens the ion diffusion distance.

Tuning electronic structure of δ-MnO2 by the alkali-ion (K, Na, Li) associated manganese vacancies for high-rate supercapacitors

Lengyuan Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, delta-MnO2 with alkali-ion associated manganese vacancies were fabricated by a hydrothermal reaction, and the correlation between their electronic structure and pseudocapacitance were systematically investigated. The introduction of cation vacancies resulted in significant changes in the morphology of MnO2 and enhanced its conductivity, pseudocapacitance, and rate capability. Further theoretical calculations confirmed that cation vacancies can increase carrier concentration and improve the conductivity and pseudocapacitance of MnO2, providing a promising approach for the development of active and durable electrode materials.

Alkali Ions Pre-Intercalated Layered MnO2 Nanosheet for Zinc-Ions Storage

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: By pre-intercalating alkali ions and water crystals into layered delta-MnO2, ultra-thin nanosheets of K0.27MnO2∙0.54H2O (KMO) and Na0.55Mn2O4∙1.5H2O were prepared, which act as pillars to stabilize the structures and enable rapid cation diffusion in the KMO structure, leading to high power capability and good cycling stability. The charge storage mechanism of KMO in an aqueous Zn-ion battery involves (de)intercalation of H3O+ with further dissolution-precipitation of Zn-4(OH)6(SO4)∙5H2O solid product on the KMO surface, as revealed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements and in-operando X-ray diffraction techniques.
