Using cultivated organic soil depth to form soil conservation management zones

Raphael Deragon et al.

Summary: This study characterized the properties of cultivated Organic soils in Montreal's southwest plain and identified indicators for soil degradation. The study also proposed management zones for soil conservation based on these indicators. The results showed that shallower soils exhibited more signs of degradation, and spatial contrasts were found. Precision agriculture techniques may be needed to optimize soil conservation interventions.

Spatial cross-validation is not the right way to evaluate map accuracy

Alexandre M. J-C Wadoux et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that cross-validation statistics in mapping studies are often optimistic due to the neglect of spatial autocorrelation. A numerical experiment on above-ground biomass mapping demonstrates that standard cross-validation results in smaller bias compared to spatial cross-validation. Spatial cross-validation lacks theoretical foundation and should not be used for map accuracy assessment, while standard cross-validation is inadequate for clustered data. Design-unbiased accuracy assessment can be achieved through probability sampling and design-based inference without considering spatial autocorrelation.

Bio-Inspired Hybridization of Artificial Neural Networks: An Application for Mapping the Spatial Distribution of Soil Texture Fractions

Ruhollah Taghizadeh-Mehrjardi et al.

Summary: This study developed a series of hybridized artificial neural network models incorporating bio-inspired optimization algorithms for predicting soil particle size fractions in Mazandaran Province, Iran. The results showed that the MBO-ANN approach outperformed other methods, significantly reducing errors and uncertainties in predictions.
