Cross-ventilation of a generic building with various configurations of external and internal openings

Xuelin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that using a two-opening configuration in buildings can significantly improve cross-ventilation efficiency, with larger openings on the windward or leeward side achieving higher ventilation rates. Additionally, the presence of internal walls leads to smaller ventilation rates, which can be minimized by adopting multiple narrow internal walls and horizontally-oriented walls.

Numerical investigations of Re-independence and influence of wall heating on flow characteristics and ventilation in full-scale 2D street canyons

Hongyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the integrated impacts of wind and thermal buoyancy on urban turbulence, ventilation, and pollutant dispersion in full-scale 2D deep street canyons. Results showed that different wall heating patterns can influence airflow patterns and pollutant dilution capacity in the street canyon environment.

Guidelines for passive control of traffic-related air pollution in street canyons: An overview for urban planning

D. Voordeckers et al.

Summary: Recent studies highlight the importance of addressing traffic-related air pollution in urban environments, particularly in street canyons with limited natural ventilation and higher pollution levels. Despite numerous studies conducted on this issue, information remains fragmented and applications in urban planning are relatively unknown. Therefore, this study aims to provide a comprehensive overview, formulate spatial guidelines, and improve the application of reviewed studies in urban planning.

Investigation of the Reynolds number independence of cavity flow in 2D street canyons by wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations

Yuanyuan Lin et al.

Summary: This study revisited the Reynolds number independence criteria for 2D street canyons using wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations, investigating a wide range of Reynolds numbers and introducing an optimized ratio of relative changes to evaluate the flow regimes' similarity. It was found that the fully Reynolds number independent flow regimes in deep canyons have fewer vortices than previous literature values based on down-scale experiments and simulations. The variation in critical Reynolds number with different aspect ratios suggests the need to conduct Reynolds number independence tests for various model configurations.
