Summary: Healthcare quality data can be significantly improved by supplementing structured EMR data with NLP-derived data. By using NLP, health systems may be able to fill the gaps in documentation when structured tools are not yet available or there are barriers to using them in clinical practice.

A Comparison of Dimensional and Categorical Approaches to Characterizing the Association Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Future Suicide Attempts

Patient and Clinical Factors Associated With Response to Medications for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Brian R. Shiner et al.

Summary: In a study involving 6,839 VA outpatients with clinical diagnoses of PTSD, it was found that there were no significant differences in medication response among clinical subgroups. Higher baseline PCL scores and concurrent evidence-based psychotherapy were predictors of meaningful improvement, while high levels of disability were associated with not achieving meaningful improvement. Through this real-world study, it is suggested that combined treatment with evidence-based psychotherapy should be considered for all patients taking medications for PTSD, especially those with high levels of disability.

Recent trends in the rural-urban suicide disparity among veterans using VA health care

Brian Shiner et al.

Summary: This study found that people living in rural areas are at higher risk of suicide, and the efforts of the Department of Veterans Affairs have not reduced the disparity in suicide rates between different regions among VA users. White VA users have significantly higher suicide rates than black users, and the rural-urban disparity in suicide among patients appears to be driven by differences in racial composition.
