Current perspectives on global sugar consumption: definitions, recommendations, population intakes, challenges and future direction

Janette Walton et al.

Summary: There is currently a significant focus on the relationship between dietary sugar consumption and health outcomes, but global data on sugar intake are lacking organization. A comprehensive review of sugar intake worldwide shows that children and adolescents have the highest intake of free sugars, while older adults have the lowest intake. Although some individual studies show reductions in sugar intake, overall intakes still exceed recommendations.

Dietary fat intakes in Irish children: changes between 2005 and 2019

Aileen O'Connor et al.

Summary: Current fat intake among Irish children remains stable over time, with slight decreases in total fat, SFA, and trans fat. However, adherence to SFA recommendations is inadequate, while compliance with PUFA and EPA and DHA recommendations is also lacking. These findings can inform the development of dietary strategies to improve compliance with current recommendations.

Adherence to Food-Based Dietary Guidelines: A Systemic Review of High-Income and Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Ana Carolina B. Leme et al.

Summary: Research comparing adherence to food-based dietary guidelines between high-income (HIC) and low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC) is lacking. Findings show that almost 40% of populations in both HIC and LMIC do not adhere to their national FBDGs. Fruit and vegetable consumption was highest, but consumption of discretionary foods varied between HIC and LMIC. Grains and dairy were consumed below recommendations in both HIC and LMIC, while consumption of animal proteins, particularly red meat, exceeded recommendations. Individuals from both HIC and LMIC may not be meeting at least one dietary recommendation from their country's guidelines. Future health policies, behavioral-change strategies, and dietary guidelines should take these findings into consideration.
