Geomagnetically Induced Currents at Middle Latitudes: 1. Quiet-Time Variability

Adam C. Kellerman et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term variability of GIC at middle latitudes and its relation to geomagnetic activity. The results show that GIC nodes routinely respond to tidal-driven Sq variations, with a local time and seasonal dependence. GIC QDCs can be used as a robust baseline to quantify the importance of GICs during geomagnetically active times.

Modelling of geomagnetically induced currents in the Czech transmission grid

Michal Svanda et al.

Summary: The study found that the maximum expected magnitudes of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) in the Czech transmission power network are about 15 A during a Halloween storm-like event and do not exceed 40 A under extreme-storm conditions with a 1-V/km geoelectric field. Furthermore, it is speculated that the statistical correlation between increased geomagnetic activity and anomaly rate in the power grid may be due to repeated exposure of devices to low-amplitude GICs.

Reproducibility of the Geomagnetically Induced Currents at Middle Latitudes During Space Weather Disturbances

Takashi Kikuchi et al.

Summary: The study found a strong linear correlation between the geomagnetically induced current (GIC) and the y-component magnetic field (B-y), which can be used for predicting GIC. The correlation is high for short periods (T < 1 hour), but low for longer periods (T > 6 hours). Using a two-layer model can better replicate GIC, and the strong B-y dependence of GIC during the daytime may be related to a specific mode in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide.
