Females with type 2 diabetes are at higher risk for accelerated cognitive decline than males: CAROLINA-COGNITION study

Chloe Verhagen et al.

Summary: This study found that females with type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk of accelerated cognitive decline (ACD) compared to males. Depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between sex and ACD. However, even after considering vascular and diabetes-related factors, complications, and treatment, a significant portion of the higher risk in females remained unexplained. Further research is needed to understand the causes of sex-specific ACD in type 2 diabetes.

Statin use moderates the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise on older adults ? performances on the Stroop test: A subanalysis

Kathia Saillant et al.

Summary: Aerobic training can enhance cognition in older adults through improved cardiorespiratory fitness, but statins may limit the physical benefits. This study found that the cognitive benefits of aerobic training in older adults were moderated by statin intake, with improvements in switching reaction time seen in non-users but not in users. Further randomized studies with larger sample sizes and different types of statins are needed to confirm these findings.
