Pseudomonas sp. TCd-1 significantly alters the rhizosphere bacterial community of rice in Cd contaminated paddy field

Xin Qian et al.

Summary: Cd pollution of paddy soils is a major concern for food security and environmental issues. Microbial bioremediation using Cd-resistant bacteria can effectively reduce Cd accumulation in crops. This study investigated the impact of Pseudomonas sp. TCd-1 on the rhizosphere bacterial communities of rice crops under Cd stress, revealing changes in community structure and network interactions. The findings provide insights for developing efficient bioremediation strategies and safe rice production in Cd-contaminated fields.

Microbial functional assemblages predicted by the FAPROTAX analysis are impacted by physicochemical properties, but C, N and S cycling genes are not in mangrove soil in the Beibu Gulf, China

Zicong Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the functional characteristics of microbial communities in different mangrove habitats and highlights the potential influence of soil texture on the abundance of N, S, and C metabolic genes. The results suggest that the physicochemical properties of mangrove soil have a greater impact on the functional microbial groups than functional genes.

Iron and sulfur reduction caused by different growth seasons inhibits cadmium transfer in the soil-rice system

Zhang Feng et al.

Summary: The effects of different growth seasons on the iron and sulfur redox states in the soil and their impact on Cd uptake by rice were investigated. The results showed that the filling and mature stages were crucial for Cd uptake, with early rice cultivars exhibiting lower Cd accumulation and concentration than late rice cultivars. The higher abundance of Fe-reducing bacteria and S-reducing bacteria during these stages promoted Fe and S reduction, leading to decreased available Cd content. This study highlights the importance of maintaining high moisture content in the soil during these critical stages to reduce Cd uptake by rice.

Can We Use Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) to Assign the Ecological Functions of Soil Bacteria?

Chakriya Sansupa et al.

Summary: This study assessed the application of FAPROTAX in soil environments and found that over 97% of the FAPROTAX assigned OTUs may potentially perform functions in agricultural and forest soils. The study suggests that FAPROTAX can be used for a fast-functional screening of bacterial data from terrestrial ecosystems and improving taxonomic and functional reference databases can enhance its performance.

Elevation-related climate trends dominate fungal co-occurrence network structure and the abundance of keystone taxa on Mt. Norikura, Japan

Ying Yang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the connectivity of fungal co-occurrence networks decreases with elevation, and climate plays a dominant role in regulating co-occurrence patterns, apparently acting indirectly through soil characteristics. Additionally, higher elevations have fewer keystone taxa than lower elevations.

The Structure of Rhizosphere Fungal Communities of Wild and Domesticated Rice: Changes in Diversity and Co-occurrence Patterns

Jingjing Chang et al.

Summary: Domestication of rice increases the alpha diversity of rice rhizosphere fungal community compared to wild rice, but decreases the complexity of the fungal community. Specific rare taxa were enriched in the rhizosphere of domesticated rice, and the relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and soilborne fungi differed compared to wild rice. These findings suggest potential sources for bio-inoculation to reshape the rhizomicrobial community of domesticated crops for sustainable agricultural solutions.

Rice domestication influences the composition and function of the rhizosphere bacterial chemotaxis systems

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the abundance of bacterial chemotaxis genes in the rhizospheres of wild rice was higher than in cultivated rice. The composition of chemotaxis genes was distinctly different between the two types of rice. Changes in rice root metabolite profiles impacted the selection of chemotaxis systems, and a core group of chemotactic bacteria were identified in the rhizosphere bacterial community.

Long-term excess nitrogen fertilizer increases sensitivity of soil microbial community to seasonal change revealed by ecological network and metagenome analyses

Bing-Bing Li et al.

Summary: This study found that nitrogen fertilizer has an impact on soil microbial community structure and interaction, especially with long-term excess application. The fertilizer promoted certain metabolic processes while reducing other traits, making microbial networks more sensitive to environmental changes.
