Significant impact of nationwide SARS-CoV-2 lockdown measures on the circulation of other respiratory virus infections in Austria

Summary: The study found that the implementation of lockdown measures in Austria led to a significant reduction in cumulative cases of different respiratory virus infections, especially for seasonal influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and human metapneumovirus, resulting in the end of annual epidemics. However, a re-increase of rhinovirus infections was observed after the lockdown measures were relaxed.

Absence of detection of RSV and influenza during the COVID-19 pandemic in a Brazilian cohort: Likely role of lower transmission in the community

Summary: RSV and influenza are prevalent seasonal community viruses, and this study aimed to report the detection of these viruses during the period of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that while SARS-CoV-2 was positive in 32.7% of participants, influenza and RSV were not detected at all. This suggests that measures to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission may have had a significant impact on the spread of other respiratory pathogens.

Shifting Patterns of Respiratory Virus Activity Following Social Distancing Measures for Coronavirus Disease 2019 in South Korea

Summary: This study analyzed national surveillance data from 2016-2019 and 2020 in South Korea and found that after the implementation of social distancing measures for SARS-CoV-2, detection rates of enveloped respiratory viruses significantly decreased, while nonenveloped viruses persisted. Additionally, rates of human rhinovirus (HRV) detection in hospitalized patients significantly increased in 2020.
