Non-conventional yeasts can be selected as hosts to avoid extensive strain engineering of model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae for biosynthesis of commercial molecules other than ethanol. These non-conventional yeasts offer desirable phenotypes for industrial usage, but advanced metabolic engineering efforts in them are still lacking due to limited availability of systems and synthetic biology methods.
