Thiosulfate as external electron donor accelerating denitrification at low temperature condition in S0-based autotrophic denitrification biofilter

Xue-Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of low temperature on the performance of S-0-SAD biofilter and proposes the use of thiosulfate to enhance nitrate removal efficiency. By extending EBCT and reducing thiosulfate dosage simultaneously, the desired nitrate removal efficiency is achieved.

Effects of different reduced sulfur forms as electron donors in the start-up process of short-cut sulfur autotrophic denitrification

Yan Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different reduced sulfur forms on the start-up speed of short-cut sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SSADN) reactors. The results showed that the slow dissolution rate of S-0 led to a slower NO2--N production rate, but a higher NO2--N accumulation efficiency. Additionally, the microbial community structure and abundance differed significantly between reactors using different sulfur forms.

Ball milling potassium ferrate activated biochar for efficient chromium and tetracycline decontamination: Insights into activation and adsorption mechanisms

Jianhua Qu et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe-biochar composites were synthesized and used for the removal of Cr(VI)/TC from water. It was found that higher temperature promoted the formation of zero-valent iron and Fe3C, and MBCBM700 showed higher adsorption capacity for Cr(VI)/TC. The adsorption mechanisms involved ion exchange, pore filling, precipitation, complexation, reduction, and electrostatic attraction.

Denitrification performance and mechanism of biofilter constructed with sulfur autotrophic denitrification composite filler in engineering application

Yin Zhou et al.

Summary: The study constructed biofilters with sulfur autotrophic denitrification composite filler (SADCF) to investigate the application potential of SAD technology. The results demonstrated the feasibility of SADCF-based biofilters with a maximum nitrate volume load of 0.75 kg N/(m(3).d) and low accumulation of nitrite and ammonium. The study also identified iron reducing bacteria and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria under real-world operating conditions.

Choosing the right packing in millipacked bed reactors under single phase gas flow

Vittorio Petrazzuoli et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the hydrodynamic features of millipacked bed reactors in single phase gas flow, investigating the effects of various parameters such as reactor/particle diameter ratio, bed length, and gas velocity. Different behaviors of Peclet number were observed with different reactor/particle diameter ratios and arrangements of cylindrical particles. A criterion to calculate maximum conversion without considering dispersion effects was proposed, highlighting situations where caution is needed. Filling the porosity of beds with powder can reduce dispersion and improve mass transfer in reactors with internal diameters between 2 and 4 mm, leading to better conversion rates for specific reactions.

Roughness and wettability of biofilm carriers: A systematic review

Sajjad Al-Amshawee et al.

Summary: The roughness and wettability of biofilm carriers play a crucial role in microbial attachment and biofilm stability. Rough and wetted surfaces are essential for the initial adhesion of bacterial communities and provide robust protection from detachment. Insufficient roughness or mismatched wettability with biomass can significantly destabilize the overall biofilm system performance.

Shu-Sen Wang et al.

Summary: By comparing sulfur autotrophic denitrification (SAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) filters under identical conditions, this study found that while the start-up time of SAD filter is longer, it outperforms HD filter in terms of performance and cost, showcasing potential application prospects.
