Electricity-enhanced anaerobic, non-photosynthetic mixotrophy by Clostridium carboxidivorans with increased carbon efficiency and alcohol production

Chi Cheng et al.

Summary: Anaerobic, non-photosynthetic mixotrophy (ANP mixotrophy) is a process where glucose consumption and CO2 fixation occur concurrently. Previous studies used exogenous reducing power like H2 and syngas, but their low solubility hindered efficient utilization by bacteria. This study used a bioelectrochemical system to provide electrons for CO2 fixation in acetogenic bacteria, resulting in higher alcohol production and carbon efficiency.

Biohydrogen and biomethane production from food waste using a two-stage dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR) system

Ju-Hyeong Jung et al.

Summary: This study investigated a two-stage dynamic membrane bioreactor system for biohydrogen and biomethane production from food waste. The system achieved high rates of hydrogen and methane production from particulate feedstock, recovering up to 79% of the chemical energy in the waste as renewable energy. The study also identified optimal operational conditions and dominant microbial populations.

A redox-based strategy to enhance propionic and butyric acid production during anaerobic fermentation

Boyang Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the selective production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during anaerobic mixed-culture fermentation. The experiment successfully produced propionic acid and butyric acid using chicken manure as a substrate under an alkaline environment. Amino acid addition and redox balance control were used to regulate the final VFA profile.

Effects of benzyl viologen on increasing NADH availability, acetate assimilation, and butyric acid production by Clostridium tyrobutyricum

Hongxin Fu et al.

Summary: In this study, benzyl viologen (BV) was utilized to enhance butyric acid production by Clostridium tyrobutyricum from glucose, while eliminating acetic acid accumulation. The addition of BV increased butyric acid yield and productivity, inhibited acetate production, and promoted glucose and acetate co-utilization for butyric acid production. Manipulating metabolic flux and redox balance through BV and acetate addition provided a simple approach for efficient butyric acid production.
