Runze Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the significant impact of intrinsic drawbacks in WAS on AD performance, including cemented structure, low biomass fraction, and high levels of inhibitory pollutants. To enhance WAS digestion efficiency, potential strategies such as pretreatment, bioaugmentation, and substance addition were critically analyzed. Future directions for improving WAS digestion were also proposed from technical, management, and economic perspectives.

New insights into different surfactants' impacts on sludge fermentation: Focusing on the particular metabolic processes and microbial genetic traits

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: Different categories of surfactants have been found to have positive effects on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production during waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation. The presence of surfactants improves solubilization and hydrolysis steps, leading to enhanced acidification. Surfactant conditioning enriches functional microorganisms associated with VFA generation and increases the expression of key genes involved in the process. The bioavailable substrate improvement, functional bacterial enrichment, and metabolic activity upregulation induced by surfactants jointly contribute to VFA promotion during WAS fermentation.

Insights into Fe(II)-sulfite-based pretreatment strategy for enhancing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from waste activated sludge: Performance and mechanism

Lixin Tian et al.

Summary: The concept of co-treating waste activated sludge with waste-derived sulfite and environmentally-friendly ferrous iron is proposed in this paper. The results show that pretreating waste activated sludge with Fe(II)-activated sulfite significantly increases the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), enhances microbial growth and organic waste biodegradation, improves sludge dewaterability, and promotes vivianite production.

Enhanced short-chain fatty acids production through a short-term anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge: Synergistic pretreatment of alkali and alkaline hydrolase blend

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of alkaline hydrolase blend (AHB) incubation at initial pH 10.0 condition for enhancing anaerobic fermentation in waste activated sludge management. The results show that this method significantly increased the release of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and promoted the hydrolysis and biodegradation of dissolved organic matters. The AHB-based strategy proves to be a cost-effective and carbon-beneficial technology for sludge management.

Summary: This study revealed the impact of allicin on volatile fatty acid generation during waste-activated sludge fermentation. The results showed that the presence of allicin significantly enhanced the VFA yield and promoted the solubilization, hydrolysis, and acidification of the sludge. Metagenomic analysis revealed the upregulation of key genes involved in microbial metabolism and fatty acid synthesis. Allicin also induced the production of signaling molecules and enhanced microbial adaptive capacity. Polyamide 6 microplastics facilitate methane production during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Hongbo Chen et al.

Summary: The study identifies the key role of Polyamide 6 (PA6) microplastics in enhancing methane production during anaerobic digestion, with a significant increase in methane production due to the presence of caprolactam (CPL). PA6 has a less toxic effect compared to other microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic digestion, and it promotes key enzyme activities leading to increased methane production potential and volatile solids destruction.
