Encapsulation for Improving in Vitro Gastrointestinal Digestion of Plant Polyphenols and Their Applications in Food Products

Methavee Peanparkdee et al.

Summary: Plant polyphenols are health-promoting compounds that have the potential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, but their bioavailability is low. Encapsulation technology improves their stability, with preparation techniques and material types being key factors. This review summarizes recent studies on the evaluation of bioaccessibility of plant polyphenols and their micro- or nanocapsules using in vitro gastrointestinal models, and highlights the bioaccessibility of encapsulated plant polyphenols in food products.

Genome-wide effect of non-optimal temperatures under anaerobic conditions on gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Estefani Garcia-Rios et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanisms of thermal adaptation in yeast is crucial for developing strains better adapted to industrial processes. This study analyzed the transcriptomic responses of three different Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains grown at non-optimal temperatures. The results showed that cold conditions induced a stronger transcriptional response compared to heat conditions, and identified common genes that were up- or down-regulated in all three strains. The study also found a good correlation between gene activity and protein abundance, particularly at low temperatures, providing insight into the specific mechanisms involved in temperature adaptation.

Economic determinants on the implementation of a Eucalyptus wood biorefinery producing biofuels, energy and high added-value compounds

Daniel G. Gomes et al.

Summary: The economic impact of various scalable process improvements in a Eucalyptus wood biorefinery was assessed, showing that integrating cheese whey and recovering XOS can significantly enhance economic output. The final integrated process, producing ethanol, XOS, and energy, resulted in a notable reduction in the minimum ethanol selling price, highlighting the importance of biorefinery schemes in utilizing lignocellulosic materials economically.

Co-production of biofuels and value-added compounds from industrial Eucalyptus globulus bark residues using hydrothermal treatment

Daniel G. Gomes et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal treatment was used to fractionate industrial Eucalyptus globulus bark residue for biofuels and value-added compounds. The highest glucose yield of 84% was achieved at a severity factor of 4.04, resulting in a 4.38-fold improvement in enzymatic saccharification of cellulose. Esteemed strategies for bio-ethanol production included simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and pre-saccharification and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (PSSF).

Uncoupling glucose sensing from GAL metabolism for heterologous lactose fermentation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Jing Zou et al.

Summary: The development of a system for direct lactose to ethanol fermentation creates a market for underutilized whey permeate produced by the dairy industry. By uncoupling glucose and galactose metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and optimizing lactose uptake and conversion, researchers have successfully engineered a yeast strain capable of converting lactose into ethanol efficiently.

Cell surface engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for simultaneous valorization of corn cob and cheese whey via ethanol production

Joana T. Cunha et al.

Summary: This study engineered industrial strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae with improved thermotolerance and stress resistance for cell surface display of cellulolytic enzymes, enabling high ethanol titers through consolidated bioprocessing. Additionally, beta-galactosidase was displayed for lactose consumption, resulting in high ethanol production from the simultaneous use of cheese whey and pretreated corn cob as substrate. The multi-feedstock valorization approach and lactose-consuming cellulolytic yeast led to a 60% reduction in materials costs and a 2.5-fold increase in annual ethanol production, contributing to the establishment of economically viable ethanol processes.

Summary: This study explored the microbial biosynthesis of resveratrol from lignocellulosic materials, identifying three industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains suitable for de novo production of resveratrol through genetic engineering. The selected strain showed significantly increased resveratrol production at high temperature, achieving a maximum titer of 187.07 mg/L from glucose and ethanol. Notably, it also successfully produced resveratrol from cellulose in a Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation process, establishing a new approach for industrial-scale production.
