Roadmap to carbon emissions neutral industrial parks: Energy, economic and environmental analysis

Xintong Wei et al.

Summary: This article discusses the feasibility and optimal scheme for implementing an electricthermal carbon emissions neutral industrial park, constructing a framework and optimization model. The study finds that achieving carbon emissions neutrality comes with a high cost, while implementing a compromise scheme for lower emissions is also worth researching.

High salinity slowed organic acid production from acidogenic fermentation of kitchen wastewater by shaping functional bacterial community

Jianghao Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of salinity on the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the anaerobic fermentation of kitchen wastewater. The results showed that high salinity conditions accelerated the release of soluble proteins and inhibited the hydrolysis and degradation of proteins and carbohydrates. High salinity delayed the production of n-butyric acid but did not change the composition of total SCFAs. It also enriched certain bacterial genera and showed negative correlation with the relative abundance of bacteria responsible for SCFA production.

Effect of inoculum pretreatment on the microbial and metabolic dynamics of food waste dark fermentation

Lijun Luo et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated and compared different inoculum pretreatment methods to quickly select dark fermentative bacteria from anaerobic sludge for the bioconversion of food waste. The results showed that the treatment methods of heat and alkali produced the highest hydrogen production rate and yield. Analysis of organic acids and microbial data revealed the presence of acetate and butyrate as major by-products, with Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria as the dominant phyla.

Techno-economic analysis of solar/wind power based hydrogen production

Masad Mezher Hasan et al.

Summary: The paper focuses on analyzing the cost of solar/wind hybrid power-based hydrogen production for different system configurations. Different wind turbines with varying rated powers and hub heights, as well as different types of solar panels, were integrated into the hybrid energy system. A case study in Iraq was conducted, and Basrah was found to have the highest potential for electricity and hydrogen production among the considered cities.

Effect of genus Clostridium abundance on mixed-culture fermentation converting food waste into biohydrogen

Ju-Hyeong Jung et al.

Summary: The study found that heat-treated and frozen H2-producing granular sludge showed higher H2 yield and production rate compared to heat-treated methanogenic sludge in mixed-culture dark fermentative H2 production. Inoculation after centrifugation method demonstrated better H2 production performance. Homoacetogenesis was identified as a major H2-consuming pathway, and the abundance of Clostridium showed a linear relationship with H2 production rate and lag-phase time.

Policy recommendations for the zero energy building promotion towards carbon neutral in Asia-Pacific Region

Shicong Zhang et al.

Summary: The current global trend towards decarbonization under the Paris Agreement is driving the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to reduce energy intensity and increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix. The promotion of Zero Energy Building (ZEB) is considered the most effective way to achieve these goals, with the five largest economies in the APEC also aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050/2060.
