Biofilm matrix and artificial mediator for efficient electron transport in CO2 microbial electrosynthesis

Young Eun Song et al.

Summary: Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a promising method to convert inorganic gaseous carbon into valuable chemicals through electrode-based electron transfer. The addition of artificial mediators improves acetate synthesis, and regular media replacement helps adapt mediator-utilizing species. Biofilm composition and interaction with suspended cells play a crucial role in MES performance.

Electrode-attached cell-driven biogas upgrading of anaerobic digestion effluent CO2 to CH4 using a microbial electrosynthesis cell

Minsoo Kim et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of using microbial electrosynthesis (MES) to directly convert CO2 produced from anaerobic digestion into CH4. The results showed that applying an appropriate cathodic potential could achieve high methane production rate and purity. Furthermore, next generation sequencing revealed that the bacterial community associated with the cathode surface played a significant role in methane production.

Photoautotrophic hydrogen production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in a microbial electrosynthesis cell

Shuwei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photoautotrophic H-2 production of Rhodobacter sphaeroides in microbial electrosynthesis, utilizing CO2 as the sole carbon source. The research also explored the impact of glutamate as a nitrogen source on hydrogen production. The findings showed that MES-driven electron and proton transfer enabled simultaneous hydrogen production and CO2 uptake, with significant improvements in hydrogen production when using glutamate.

New insights into the acetate uptake transporter (AceTr) family: Unveiling amino acid residues critical for specificity and activity

Toni Rendulic et al.

Summary: This study aimed at improving the transport of biotechnologically relevant carboxylic acids in engineered microbial cell factories by studying plasma membrane transporters belonging to the AceTr family. By analyzing the conserved amino acid residues within AceTr family members and using computer-assisted 3D modeling tools, new mutation targets were identified, leading to insights into the structural and functional characteristics of these proteins. Additionally, successful expression of the Escherichia coli SatP in Saccharomyces cerevisiae marked a significant milestone in the field of yeast cell engineering.
