Exploring algal technologies for a circular bio-based economy in rural sector

Rashi Vishwakarma et al.

Summary: This review discusses the advantages and constraints of integrating algal technologies into the rural economy. Existing studies show that utilizing wastewater for algal cultivation can achieve significant biomass yields in sectors such as aquaculture and agriculture. Additionally, using algal biomass as a feed supplement in poultry and aquaculture can improve product quality and reduce production costs. However, more long-term studies are needed to establish the feasibility of using wastewater as a feed supplement and to explore the full utilization and downstream processing of harvested biomass.

Enhanced production of microalgal biomass and lipid as an environmentally friendly biodiesel feedstock through actinomycete co-culture in biogas digestate effluent

Bancha Kumsiri et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative approach using actinomycetes co-culture with microalgae in biogas digestate effluent to enhance biomass and lipid production, providing a sustainable feedstock for biodiesel. The co-cultivation significantly increased biomass production, chlorophyll a content, and lipid productivity compared to microalgae monoculture, with accumulated lipids containing long-chain fatty acids suitable for biodiesel production. Overall, the actinomycete co-culture shows great potential for cost-effective and environmentally friendly microbial-based biofuel production.

Heterotrophic, chemoautotrophic and mature approaches in biofloc system for Pacific white shrimp

Gabriela S. Ferreira et al.

Summary: Chemical autotrophic and mature treatments can maintain toxic nitrogen compounds at low levels without addition of carbohydrates, while the heterotrophic system showed higher levels of ammonia and nitrite during the rearing cycle. Both chemical autotrophic and mature treatments maintained water quality, especially nitrogen removal, at a constant level, indicating advantages in shrimp growth. Analysis of microbial communities showed higher protein proportions in the heterotrophic system compared to other treatments.

Ghasem Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The study explored the effects of single strain and multi-strain potential probiotics on Nile tilapia in different culture systems. Results showed that probiotics had significant impacts on growth, immunity, and other physiological indicators of Nile tilapia in biofloc and stagnant-renewal conditions. Interestingly, the biofloc system enhanced the effects of probiotics compared to the stagnant-renewal system, and multi-strain probiotics were more efficient in enhancing the immune system than single-strain probiotics.
