Recovery of anammox process performance after substrate inhibition: Reactor performance, sludge morphology, and microbial community

Kai Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the recovery process of a reactor after being inhibited by a high nitrogen load. The results showed that after 75 days of recovery, the nitrogen removal rate and stoichiometric ratio of the reactor were restored to pre-inhibition levels. The surface structure of the granular sludge changed to a broccoli-like structure, and there was an increase in the Ca and P contents of the granules. Moreover, the abundance of the anammox bacterium Candidatus brocadia also increased, and it showed a positive correlation with specific microbial species.

Metagenomics illuminated the mechanism of enhanced nitrogen removal and vivianite recovery induced by zero-valent iron in partial-denitrification/anammox process

Quanhao Dou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy using zero-valent iron (ZVI) combined with acetic acid to optimize the partial-denitrification/anammox (PD/A) process. The enhanced nitrogen removal mechanism is elucidated through metagenomics. The results demonstrate that this strategy can efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphorus while producing valuable byproducts.

The effects of Fe(III) and Fe(II) on anammox process and the Fe-N metabolism

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different Fe stress on anammox process, finding that high Fe(II) concentrations may lead to precipitate formation while continuous addition of 30 mg/L-Fe(III) can damage EPS composition. Moreover, addition of Fe(II) could induce nitrate reduction, and OM27_clade and norank_f__Burkholderiaceae may play important roles in this process.

Responses of anammox process to elevated Fe(III) stress: Reactor performance, microbial community and functional genes

Shaoqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that long-term exposure to low concentration Fe(III) can improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of the anammox process, while high Fe(III) concentrations deteriorate reactor performance. Different functional bacteria show varied responses to Fe(III) stress, with high concentrations of Fe(III) significantly altering the anammox community structure.

The short-term and long-term effects of Fe(II) on the performance of anammox granules

Biru Zhou et al.

Summary: Fe(II) has concentration-dependent effects on specific anammox activity (SAA) and reactor performance, with low concentrations enhancing SAA and high concentrations inhibiting SAA. Long-term exposure to low Fe(II) concentrations can improve the tolerance of anammox to Fe(II). Fe(II) also affects extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and the performance of anammox granules.

Comprehensive metagenomic and enzyme activity analysis reveals the negatively influential and potentially toxic mechanism of polystyrene nanoparticles on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands

Yixuan Ma et al.

Summary: This study found that polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) had a significant inhibitory effect on nitrogen transformation in constructed wetlands, particularly in short-term exposure experiments. PS NPs mainly accumulated in the biofilm of wetlands, affecting a range of enzyme activities related to nitrogen metabolism and antioxidant systems. The toxic mechanisms of PS NPs may involve altering the abundance of nitrogen transformation genes and key genes in carbon metabolism.
