Mainstream double-anammox driven by nitritation and denitratation using a one-stage step-feed bioreactor with real municipal wastewater

Wenyu Li et al.

Summary: A novel double-anammox process for advanced mainstream nitrogen removal was established using a step-feed sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system, which effectively reduced total inorganic nitrogen concentration and achieved a 71.4% contribution of anammox to nitrogen removal. Gradient C/N reduction facilitated denitratation/anammox in the anoxic stage, and simultaneous nitritation and anammox were achieved in the oxic stage.

The structure of microbial communities of activated sludge of large-scale wastewater treatment plants in the city of Moscow

Shahjahon Begmatov et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are crucial for water purification. This study analyzed the microbial communities of activated sludge (AS) in nine large-scale WWTPs in Moscow, Russia, revealing that the composition of microbial communities varied depending on the plant operating technology. The WWTPs using the University of Cape Town (UCT) process showed efficient removal of organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus, possibly due to the presence of specific bacteria. Co-occurrence network analysis identified key microorganisms in AS, which could be targeted to manipulate the stability and performance of the AS. Comparison with WWTPs worldwide indicated that influent characteristics related to social, cultural, and environmental factors may be more important than the plant operating technology.

Advanced nitrogen removal from low C/N municipal wastewater by combining partial nitrification-anammox and endogenous partial denitrification-anammox (PN/A-EPD/A) process in a single-stage reactor

Huihui Cui et al.

Summary: The study developed an innovative partial nitrification-anammox and endogenous partial denitrificationanammox process for efficient treatment of real municipal wastewater with a C/N ratio below 3.2. The nitrogen removal mechanism analysis revealed the importance of anammox bacteria and endogenous denitrifying bacteria in biofilms and suspended sludge for improving nitrogen removal efficiency. Overall, the combined PN/A and EPD/A process proved to be a reliable and efficient alternative for mainstream anammox processes.

Hacking biofilm developed in a structured-bed reactor (SBRRIA) with integrated processes of nitrogen and organic matter removal

Carla Eloisa Diniz dos Santos et al.

Summary: The microbial community in a structured-bed reactor was able to adapt to different organic and nitrogen loads and shift according to changes in the C/N ratio, with no impact on reactor performance in terms of COD and Total-N removal. Under different C/N ratios, different bacterial families prevailed, including those capable of using organic matter, ammonia oxidizers, aerobic denitrifiers, and Anammox bacteria. The stratification of aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic zones enabled the establishment of various nitrogen degradation pathways within the reactor.
