Waste cooking oil used as carbon source for microbial lipid production: Promoter or inhibitor

Zhen Gao et al.

Summary: This study developed a co-fermentation strategy using waste cooking oil (WCO) and food waste for microbial lipid production. It was found that adjusting the pH values within a certain range could increase lipid production efficiency. The produced lipid could potentially be used for biodiesel production, leading to significant reductions in CO2 and SO2 emissions from global food waste.

An innovative approach for reducing the water and alkali consumption in the lactic acid fermentation via the reuse of pretreated liquid

Xiaoyu Ma et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance lactic acid production and reduce water and alkali consumption by reusing the pretreated liquid of spent mushroom substance. The phenol concentrations in the liquid were found to affect fermentation, but were successfully removed by adjusting the pH value. The reuse of the pretreated liquid in fermentation process not only increased lactic acid concentration, but also significantly reduced water and NaOH consumption without generating wastewater.

Challenges and Control Strategies of Odor Emission from Composting Operation

Jayanta Andraskar et al.

Summary: Composting is a biological decomposition process carried out by microbial progression, resulting in organic waste degradation and stabilization into compost. The emission of odors during composting affects compost quality, environment, and human health. Factors such as pH, temperature, and aeration impact the pattern of odor emission. Challenges include accurate odor identification, estimation, and control techniques. Techniques such as biotrickling filter, process parameter optimization, additives, microbial inoculation, and pre-treatment are used to reduce odor emissions, with potential future exploration in biogeochemical pathways through metagenomics.

Gaseous Emissions from the Composting Process: Controlling Parameters and Strategies of Mitigation

Tahseen Sayara et al.

Summary: Organic waste management is a crucial issue in modern and developing societies, with composting being a clean technology solution. However, composting also generates harmful air emissions like greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds, which need to be taken into consideration in environmental assessments. Various mitigation technologies, including the use of biochar, are being explored to reduce gaseous emissions from composting.
