Poorly conductive biochar boosting extracellular electron transfer for efficient volatile fatty acids oxidation via redox-mediated mechanism

Gaojun Wang et al.

Summary: This study explored the performances and mechanisms of biochar in promoting volatile fatty acids oxidation via extracellular electron transfer pathway. The results showed that adding biochar suspension significantly enhanced electricity generation in a bioelectrochemical system. The lower electrical resistance of the anode in the biochar-assisted groups was potentially attributed to the formation of a biofilm dominated by electro-active Geobacteraceae. Furthermore, the excellent redox-based electron exchange transfer capacity of biochar made it a transient electron acceptor, which supported the metabolism of electroactive bacteria in the initial stage and provided a bridge between suspended sludge and anode to facilitate the evolution of electroactive bacteria on the anode.

COD inhibition alleviation and anammox granular sludge stability improvement by biochar addition

Junxiang Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding different biochars on alleviating COD inhibition in anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactors and the performance and properties of anammox granular sludge (AnGS). Results showed that the addition of biochar improved nitrogen removal efficiency and enhanced the stability of AnGS granules. The TN removal efficiency increased and the particle size distribution of AnGS granules became more uniform under different biochar addition conditions. Furthermore, the stability of AnGS granules was not significantly affected by COD concentration.

Adhesion of Bacillus salmalaya and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on oil palm kernel shell biochar: A physicochemical approach

Aaronn Avit Ajeng et al.

Summary: Biochar has been found to be an effective carrier for microorganisms due to its physicochemical properties and microenvironment. In this study, the adhesion behavior of Bacillus salmalaya 139SI and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NBRC 15535 on oil palm kernel shell (OPKS) biochar was investigated. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model accurately described the adhesion process, and the adhesion equilibrium was reached after 80 minutes with a cell concentration of 10^8 CFU/g. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy images revealed the formation of microcolonies and a biofilm structure on the biochar surface, and electron dispersive spectroscopy analysis suggested that bacteria attached to mineral-rich regions on the biochar surface, which may enhance their survival.

Summary: The study found that adding corn stover-derived biochars with different particle sizes (SP, MP, LP) can significantly improve the nitrogen removal efficiency of anammox reactors and reduce the concentration of NO3- in the effluent. The particle size of biochar affects its ability to enhance EPS electron transport, with SP biochar outperforming LP biochar in promoting the growth of anammox bacteria.

Insight into the influence of particle sizes on characteristics and microbial community in the anammox granular sludge

Chongjun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated how particle size affects the physicochemical characteristics, nitrogen conversion activity, and microbial community in anammox sludge granules. The results showed that larger particle sizes correlated with higher wet density, settling velocity, and removal efficiency of ammonium and nitrite. High-throughput sequencing revealed that microbial richness and diversity decreased and then increased with increasing particle size. Granular sludge with a particle size of 1.0-1.5 mm had the largest EPS content and PN/PS ratio. To maintain high nitrogen removal performance, particle sizes of 1.5-2.0 mm should be selected.
