Microbial Lipid Production from High Concentration of Volatile Fatty Acids via Trichosporon cutaneum for Biodiesel Preparation

Summary: High concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) can be directly converted into microbial lipid by a robust oleaginous yeast Trichosporon cutaneum, with the blend of VFAs (acetic, propionic, and butyric acids) showing superior performance for lipogenesis. The study demonstrated that VFAs blend can be efficiently utilized by T. cutaneum for lipid production, indicating its potential for high-quality biodiesel production.

Bioethanol production from alkali-pretreated cassava stem waste via consolidated bioprocessing by ethanol-tolerant Clostridium thermocellum ATCC 31,924

Summary: This study explored the consolidated bioprocessing of cassava stem waste using the thermophilic bacterium Clostridium thermocellum for bioethanol production. Pretreatment of cassava stem waste with dilute alkali led to effective lignin removal and holocellulose recovery. Additionally, the ethanol tolerance of C. thermocellum was improved through chemical mutagenesis and adaptive laboratory evolution. The mutant strain produced significant amounts of bioethanol when fermenting a mixture of sugars and alkali-treated cassava stem residue.

Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis of a novel closed loop corn ethanol biorefinery

Direct lactic acid production from household food waste by lactic acid bacteria

Summary: This study analyzed the comprehensive properties of household food waste (HFW) in Shanghai and found that HFW is rich in nutrients and growth factors, providing the possibility for direct lactic acid (LA) production by inoculating lactic acid bacteria (LAB). The effects of strains, temperature, sterilized or not, initial pH, inoculum size, and substrate concentration on LA production were investigated. The results showed that different strains could be used as the inoculum, and certain conditions such as temperature and pH were favorable for LA production. High inoculum size and substrate concentration resulted in high LA concentration, but not high LA yield. Repeated batch fermentation for 32 days yielded an average LA concentration of 26.8 g/L and an LA yield of 0.20 g/g TCOD.

Bioethanol production from expired cookies and economic analysis for practical application

Summary: This study examined the potential of bioethanol production from expired cookies and assessed the economic feasibility for industrial application. It achieved an optimal ethanol production of 40.1 g/L and a highest ethanol yield of 0.4 g/g from the expired cookies. The techno-economic analysis of a plant with a capacity of 5 tons EC/day showed a total capital cost of US$540400.7 and an annual operation cost of US$144543.9, with a revenue of US$390522 from the sales of ethanol and oils.
