Dysregulation of complement and coagulation pathways: emerging mechanisms in the development of psychosis

Meike Heurich et al.

Summary: Early identification and treatment play a crucial role in improving clinical outcomes of psychotic disorders. Recent studies have identified specific protein alterations in the complement and coagulation systems, which are implicated in psychosis and can predict the transition to psychotic disorder. Further research is needed to validate the novel hypothesis regarding altered plasma levels of complement and coagulation proteins.

Sex-Specific Causal Relations between Steroid Hormones and Obesity-A Mendelian Randomization Study

Janne Pott et al.

Summary: The study revealed sex-specific causal relationships between steroid hormones, obesity, and coronary artery disease, identifying several genome-wide significant loci and demonstrating causal effects of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and 17-OH-progesterone on body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio. Additionally, the study found causal effects of testosterone, estradiol, and their ratio on waist-to-hip ratio.

All-trans retinoic acid induces synaptic plasticity in human cortical neurons

Maximilian Lenz et al.

Summary: A defining feature of the brain is its ability for synaptic contacts to adapt structurally and functionally, with atRA being identified as a potent mediator of synaptic plasticity in the adult human cortex. The coordinated structural and functional changes in excitatory synapses observed in cortical slices were accompanied by ultrastructural remodeling of the spine apparatus organelle and required mRNA translation for these synaptic adaptations. The absence of these changes in synaptopodin-deficient mice suggests the importance of this organelle in the process.
