Cell cycle control in cancer

Helen K. Matthews et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of cell cycle regulation in preventing genetic errors and cell proliferation, and how disruption of these mechanisms is associated with cancer development. Cancer arises from continuous cell division and evasion of cell cycle control mechanisms.

Folic acid-conjugated magnetic triblock copolymer nanoparticles for dual targeted delivery of 5-fluorouracil to colon cancer cells

Parvin Sadat Mirzaghavami et al.

Summary: In this study, folic acid-conjugated PEG-PCL-PEG triblock copolymer loaded with 5-fluorouracil and magnetite nanoparticles was synthesized for targeted delivery of drugs to colon cancer cells. The nanoparticles exhibited sustained drug release and showed effective cellular uptake and antitumor activity in both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Radio-sensitivity enhancement in HT29 cells through magnetic hyperthermia in combination with targeted nano-carrier of 5-Flourouracil

Parvin Sadat Mirzaghavami et al.

Summary: This study aimed to induce selective radiosensitization in HT29 cancer cells by using folic acid modified magnetic triblock copolymer nanoparticles as carrier of 5-Flourouracil (5-FU) in combination with hyperthermia, which resulted in maximal anti-cancer effects compared to other single or combined treatments. The nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized, and their cytotoxicity, drug loading capacity, and drug release profile were assessed, showing enhanced therapeutic ratio and radiosensitivity induction. Various characterizations demonstrated the potential of using folic acid modified magnetic copolymer nanoparticles with hyperthermia as an efficient approach to enhance radiation effects in cancer cells.

Radiodynamic Therapy Using TAT Peptide-Targeted Verteporfin-Encapsulated PLGA Nanoparticles

Sandhya Clement et al.

Summary: Radiodynamic therapy (RDT) is a therapy that uses high-energy X-rays instead of traditional photodynamic therapy, which can effectively treat deep-seated tumors. Studies have shown that incorporating a photosensitizer into polymer nanoparticles and targeting cell-penetrating peptides can enhance the effectiveness of RDT treatment.

Folic Acid-Targeted Paclitaxel-Polymer Conjugates Exert Selective Cytotoxicity and Modulate Invasiveness of Colon Cancer Cells

Antonella Grigoletto et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the use of polymer-drug conjugates with the correct folate/PEG ratio can significantly enhance the activity and selectivity of drugs in cancer cells. Cytotoxicity studies on leukemia cell lines show that the 3-FA conjugate is more active than the 1-FA conjugate, while folate targeting significantly affects cell migration and invasiveness.
