Locally exact asymptotic homogenization of viscoelastic composites under anti-plane shear loading

Zhelong He et al.

Summary: The recently developed elasticity-based locally exact asymptotic homogenization theory is extended to accommodate non-ageing linearly viscoelastic composites under anti-plane shear loading. The effectiveness of the theory is assessed through numerical examples and comparison with finite element method, showcasing good accuracy. The analytical solution methodology in the Laplace domain is unique and serves as a gold standard for validating numerical approaches in solving viscoelastic composite structural problems.

Increased tissue-level storage modulus and hardness with age in male cortical bone and its association with decreased fracture toughness*

Robert C. Singleton et al.

Summary: The incidence of bone fractures increases with age due to declining bone quantity and quality. In males, the age-related decline in fracture toughness of cortical bone is characterized by increased stiffness and hardness with age, while viscoelasticity remains constant. The changes in tissue-level characteristics, such as mineralization, contribute to decreased fracture toughness in male cortical bone.
