A comparison between microalgal autotrophic growth and metabolite accumulation with heterotrophic, mixotrophic and photoheterotrophic cultivation modes

Ana P. Abreu et al.

Summary: This article introduces the potential applications of microalgae as a sustainable feedstock in various areas such as food, drugs, and environmental remediation. The current limitations in large-scale microalgae production, such as low photosynthetic efficiency and expensive CO2 management, are discussed. Supplementing microalgae cultivation with organic carbon substrates can significantly increase biomass productivity, making it a viable strategy.

Towards high-quality biodiesel production from microalgae using original and anaerobically-digested livestock wastewater

Gang Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on the simultaneous treatment of livestock wastewater and high-quality biodiesel production using microalgae technology. Higher microalgal biomass production was observed in the original piggery effluent medium, while microalgae grown in anaerobically-digested effluent had a higher lipid content, which is favorable for biodiesel production. The N/P ratio in the original effluent was closer to the optimal ratio for microalgae growth compared to the anaerobically-digested effluent, indicating potential for sustainable livestock waste management.

Integrating bioremediation of textile wastewater with biodiesel production using microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris)

Tahir Fazal et al.

Summary: Microalgae-led wastewater treatment using Chlorella vulgaris shows promising results in terms of growth, dye decolorization, and COD removal. Cultivation in diluted textile wastewater leads to higher growth rate, dye decolorization, and COD efficiency compared to undiluted wastewater. This study suggests that Chlorella vulgaris can be cultivated in both types of wastewater for biodiesel production, with better results observed in diluted wastewater.

Practical strategies to improve harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal culture: A review

Nima Hajinajaf et al.

Summary: Research on renewable energy is a key challenge in this century due to increasing energy demand and environmental issues associated with fossil fuel consumption. Microalgae have received renewed attention as a potential feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of large-scale cultivation systems currently limits economic viability. This study aims to review factors influencing harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal cultures, particularly those fed with wastewater, and discuss practical strategies to promote low-cost energy production. It is concluded that among the five practical strategies considered, CO2 addition and algal recycling have the greatest impact on enhancing harvestable biomass energy yield.

Enhancing microalgae growth and product accumulation with carbon source regulation: New perspective for the coordination between photosynthesis and aerobic respiration

Pengtao Gao et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the positive effect of increasing HCO3- proportion on biomass production and carbon fixation in Chlorella vulgaris under mixotrophic cultivation. Additionally, CO32- was found to be more efficient for carbohydrate and lipid accumulation in the microalgae. Furthermore, the activity of citrate synthase decreased with higher IC/OC ratios, indicating that energy for biomass production in these conditions mainly came from photoreactions.

Conversion of poultry-fat waste to a sustainable feedstock for biodiesel production via microbubble injection of reagent vapor

Fahed Javed et al.

Summary: The economics of biodiesel production are influenced by sustainability and feedstock prices, with high biodiesel prices being a major obstacle to commercialization. Chicken fats, as waste products, are being increasingly used as feedstock for biodiesel production due to their low cost and widespread availability. Innovative methods such as vapor-liquid contacting and the use of cost-effective catalysts have been proposed to increase efficiency and reduce costs in biodiesel production, particularly when using chicken fat as a base material.
