Learned predators enhance biological control via organizational upward and trophic top-down cascades

Peter Schausberger et al.

Summary: Learning is a common phenomenon in animals, with early experiences leading to long-lasting behavioral changes. While the proximate and ultimate factors of individual learning are well understood, the consequences of learning on higher organizational levels, populations, communities, and trophic cascades remain largely unexplored.

Invasive Floating Fern Limits Aerial Colonization and Alters Community Structure of Aquatic Insects

Charles Wahl et al.

Summary: The introduction of the invasive giant salvinia poses a threat to aquatic insect communities and their life cycle completion, with high coverage impeding aerial colonization and disrupting the aquatic ecosystem. Different levels of giant salvinia coverage in mesocosms were found to impact environmental conditions and lead to changes in aquatic insect community structure. Regardless of coverage, the giant salvinia altered habitat complexity and potentially decreased the energy potential within the ecosystem.
