Upgrading of biomass pellets by torrefaction and its influence on the hydrophobicity, mechanical property, and fuel quality

Yimeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of torrefaction temperature on the physicochemical properties, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties of soybean straw pellets and pine wood pellets. The results show that torrefaction leads to the disappearance of certain oxygen-containing functional groups and a significant decrease in oxygen content in the pellets. The equilibrium moisture content and hydrophobicity are affected by the torrefaction temperature. Furthermore, as the temperature increases, the mechanical properties of the pellets decrease.
