Membrane thickness, lipid phase and sterol type are determining factors in the permeability of membranes to small solutes

Jacopo Frallicciardi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the permeability of cell membranes and finds that the physical state of the membrane plays a significant role. The yeast membrane is found to exist in a highly ordered phase.

Sterol Sponge Mechanism Is Conserved for Glycosylated Polyene Macrolides

Xiaorui Guo et al.

Summary: Amphotericin-like glycosylated polyene macrolides (GPMs) are a significant family of natural products with unclear biological mechanisms. Through bioinformatic analysis and screening experiments, a new type of GPMs, kineosporicin, was discovered. The conservation of the sterol sponge mechanism of fungicidal action was confirmed using a variety of structurally diverse known and newly discovered GPMs.

Photophysical and Structural Characterization of Intrinsically Fluorescent Sterol Aggregates

Peter Reinholdt et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dehydroergosterol (DHE) can form submicron fluorescent aggregates with a compact oblate shape of less than 100 nm in diameter. The fluorescence of DHE is lower in the aggregated state compared to the monomeric form, with characteristic spectral changes accompanying the aggregation process. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that DHE forms compact aggregates on the nanosecond scale with strong intermolecular attraction.

Effect of Cholesterol Versus Ergosterol on DPPC Bilayer Properties: Insights from Atomistic Simulations

Azadeh Alavizargar et al.

Summary: Sterols, particularly cholesterol, play a major role in the organization of biological membranes and the formation of liquid ordered domains in lipid mixtures. Molecular dynamics simulations show that cholesterol has a stronger impact on phospholipid properties compared to ergosterol, likely due to its higher planarity in the ring system.
