Molecular phylogeny of fucoxanthin-chlorophyll a/c proteins from Chaetoceros gracilis and Lhcq/Lhcf diversity

Minoru Kumazawa et al.

Summary: Diatoms adapt to various aquatic light environments and play important roles in the global carbon cycle through their unique light-harvesting system, FCPs. The study identified 46 FCPs in Chaetoceros gracilis and classified them into five subfamilies, showing diversification in FCPs among diatom species which may contribute to their species-specific adaptations to light. Phylogenetic analyses using genome data of other diatoms and microalgae suggest the proposed classification of FCPs is common among red-lineage algae derived from secondary endosymbiosis of red algae, providing insights into the evolutionary history of the red algal lineage.

Summary: The study elucidated the structural organization of PSII and PSI supercomplexes in different diatom species. Diatoms have varying architectures of PSII as an adaptation strategy, while the organization of PSI is conserved among diatoms.
