Anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation: A way forward through waste valorization approach

Chi Cheng Chong et al.

Summary: Microalgae are considered high potential feedstocks for liquid fuels to meet the increasing global energy demand, but the high costs of nutrients can hinder commercialization. Using organic-rich anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source can improve economic viability and sustainability of microalgae production, while also reducing waste and reutilizing organic fractions. Proposed solutions such as digestate dilution, microalgae strain selection, and additional organics can address challenges related to nutrient availability and toxicity, providing future directions for research in cultivating microalgae.

Chiu-Yue Lin et al.

Summary: Through response surface methodology, the optimization of operational period and initial operational pH for hydrolysis and acidogenesis of swine manure at 35 degrees C in batch operation mode was conducted. The optimal condition resulted in peak volatile acid production, methane production rate, and methane yield. The two-stage anaerobic system showed higher biogas production efficiency compared to a single-stage system, with similar dominant methane-producing species.
