Sociability as a personality trait in animals: methods, causes and consequences

Lizzy A. Gartland et al.

Summary: Variation in sociability among individuals within animal populations is considered a major axis of personality traits, along with aggressiveness, activity, exploration, and boldness. Understanding the proximate mechanisms of inter-individual differences in social tendency is crucial, and integrating research from social networks and collective behavior can greatly enhance our understanding of sociability as a personality trait.

Stability and change in gartersnake social networks across ontogeny

Morgan Skinner et al.

Summary: Developmental studies of sociality in non-human animals provide valuable insights into the evolution, function, and plasticity of social behavior. This study focused on gartersnakes and found that social interactions change as snakes age, but remain relatively stable in the short term. Male snakes become more socially active when they reach sexual maturity, and a reduction in group size combined with sexual maturity leads to the formation of stable social networks.

The development of animal personality across ontogeny: a cross-species review

Doreen Cabrera et al.

Summary: Animal personality is defined as consistent individual behavior over time and across contexts, but may vary across different developmental stages. Studies primarily focusing on behavior within a single life stage may not capture the full picture of personality development over time. Further research on personality across major developmental periods is needed to enhance our understanding of the evolution and maintenance of animal personality.

Consistent after all: behavioural repeatability in a long-lived lizard across a 6-year field study

E. Payne et al.

Summary: The study on animal personalities in wild sleepy lizards found that males were marginally more aggressive and bolder than females, with no significant effect of mass on behavior but a positive relationship between tick loads and aggression and boldness. Both aggression and boldness showed repeatability over different timescales and there was no significant difference in repeatability between sexes. Despite a weak positive correlation, no syndrome was found between aggression and boldness.

Stable social groups foster conformity and among-group differences

A. Munson et al.

Summary: The social niche hypothesis suggests that social interactions play a key role in generating consistent individual differences in behavior, while the social conformity hypothesis points out that frequent interactions within a group may mask or suppress these differences. Research findings show that group-housed sticklebacks exhibited increased among-group differences in shoaling tendencies, while individually housed fish showed decreased individual shoaling variation and repeatability.
