Evaluation and comparison of precipitation estimates and hydrologic utility of CHIRPS, TRMM 3B42 V7 and PERSIANN-CDR products in various climate regimes

Yuefen Zhang et al.

Summary: Evaluation of three high-resolution QPEs in three different climate basins in China showed that they generally perform well in estimating monthly precipitation, but tend to overestimate daily precipitation. The accuracy of extreme precipitation indices varies among the three QPEs, with better performance in humid basins compared to arid basins. Despite some shortcomings in simulating streamflow, there is a need to improve the hydrologic efficiency of all three QPEs.

Ground validation and error decomposition for six state-of-the-art satellite precipitation products over mainland China

Huajin Lei et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluates the accuracy of six widely used satellite precipitation products (SPPs) in mainland China and analyzes their performance at different spatial scales, temporal scales, and altitudes. The results show variations in performance among different SPPs and higher accuracy in southeast coastal basins. Additionally, the analysis of error components reveals the major sources of errors in SPPs.

Bias correction method of high-resolution satellite-based precipitation product for Peninsular Malaysia

Zafar Iqbal et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of six satellite-based precipitation (SBP) methods in replicating observed rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia and proposed a machine learning method to correct the bias in rainfall estimation. The study found that IMERG showed the best performance among all products, and random forest was the most suitable machine learning algorithm for classification and regression. The bias-corrected IMERG could reliably simulate observed rainfall and replicate the spatial distribution of heavy rainfall events.

Characterizing the features of precipitation for the Tibetan Plateau among four gridded datasets: Detection accuracy and spatio-temporal variabilities

Xu Yuan et al.

Summary: This study evaluates gridded precipitation datasets over the Tibetan Plateau and finds that TRMM and GLDAS perform well in daily precipitation frequency, while ERA5 excels in detecting daily precipitation events. On longer time scales, ERA5 outperforms other products in reproducing precipitation variability and reflecting spatio-temporal patterns.

Changes in precipitation amounts and extremes across Xinjiang (northwest China) and their connection to climate indices

Wenfeng Hu et al.

Summary: The climate in Xinjiang is becoming wetter, with increasing intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation, mainly concentrated in mountainous areas, northern Xinjiang, and western Xinjiang, showing significant spatial heterogeneity. There are correlations between extreme precipitation and climate indices, but the relationships are not clearly positive or negative, with many correlations advanced or delayed in phase. Extreme precipitation displays periodic changes, with a frequency of approximately 1-3 or 4-7 years, especially more obvious after the 1990s, however, the exact mechanisms involved in this require further study.

Comprehensive evaluation of precipitation datasets over Iran

Peyman Saemian et al.

Summary: Global gridded precipitation datasets are evaluated over Iran, showing that reanalysis products have higher KGE values but struggle in estimating precipitation variability. GPCC matches the validation dataset better over Iran's basins, while CPC, ERA5, and IMERG-Final are more suitable for near-real-time studies.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of IMERG version 06 precipitation products in China from 2008 to 2017, finding that the products can reproduce spatial patterns of precipitation well but show decreasing accuracy from southeast to northwest China. The final run shows improvement in precipitation estimation performance compared to early and late runs.

A Multiscale Assessment of Three Satellite Precipitation Products (TRMM, CMORPH, and PERSIANN) in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area in China

Tianyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The evaluation of satellite precipitation products over the Three Gorges Reservoir area in China at multiple timescales showed that CMORPH and TRMM provided reasonably good estimates of rainfall amount, while PERSIANN exhibited larger biases. CMORPH had slightly better data precision than TRMM and both were able to reproduce the diurnal cycle of rainfall.
